* INCOMING *

1. KOMEN LOSES BIDEN EVENT: Citing scheduling conflicts, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, will not host a kickoff barbecue for the Susan G. Komen foundation's June 2 Global Race for the Cure in Washington. The news comes as another blow to the embattled organization, which has lost supporters and donations for its key fund-raising events in the past few months. The Daily Beast: http://bit.ly/JXTqnn

2. FEEDING NATO: The staff at McCormick Place has its work cut out catering to the folks in town for the NATO summit May 20-21. NATO-News: "For really almost two and a half days we will be serving over 19,400 meals not only to the delegates themselves and to the staff which will be here for NATO, but also to the international press that is also assembled here to cover this event. We will have 24 hours service providing breakfast, lunch and dinner," said David R. Causton, general manager of McCormick Place. http://bit.ly/IBQXxG

3. BOOSTING SAILS: Festivities for the Volvo Ocean Race's stop in Miami kicked off yesterday with the opening of the "Race Village" in Bicentennial Park, which organizers expect to attract as many as 100,000 people. With free concerts, exhibitions, and the participation of a number of brands, William D. Talbert III, president and C.E.O. of the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, says the two-week event "continues to reinforce [Miami's] position as a big-event town." Chicago Tribune: http://trib.in/KxDERo

4. VISIT ORLANDO'S C.E.O. DIES: Gary Sain, president and C.E.O. of Orlando's tourism and convention bureau, died suddenly Friday night. Sain, credited with helping the city reach a record of 51.5 million visitors in 2010, collapsed after speaking at a fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida. Visit Orlando has cancelled its annual marketing luncheon scheduled for this Friday at the Hilton Orlando as part of National Travel and Tourism Week. A spokesperson said details will be forthcoming on an industry memorial.

5. MCDONALD'S MARKETS TO MOMS: The fast food chain is hoping to change its image and part of that strategy is influencing mom bloggers. McDonald's courted Web writers at a private luncheon at last year's BlogHer conference in San Diego and has even invited bloggers to tour its headquarters. The New York Times: http://nyti.ms/Jwpjh6

6. DESIREE'S LATEST MOVE: Crain's Chicago Business, on the former White House social secretary: "Desiree Rogers says she is bringing back Ebony Fashion Fair, the annual traveling runway show that highlights up-and-coming black designers and models. It's all part of her effort to reinvigorate Johnson Publishing Company and its many brands, including Ebony and Jet magazines...In her comments, reported by the New York Observer, Ms. Rogers acknowledged she's also exploring new businesses that will broaden Johnson's reach, including 'Jet-sponsored concerts, boat trips, maybe an online dating site—and overhauling its existing ones.'" http://bit.ly/KmIfGf

7. WIRED'S NEW EXPO: After the successful run of its Nextfest event between 2004 and 2008, Wired magazine is planning a new event designed to be part trade show, part conference, and part festival. Dubbed the Wired Live Expo, the event scheduled for November 15-18 at the Washington, D.C., Convention Center will include keynotes, workshops, and concerts. Show director Ryan Roth told Folio, "The event will be a hybrid between the Wired Pop-Up Shop, which is kind of like a gallery meets retail, and Nextfest, which was mainly R&D experts speaking from their respective companies...It's a consumer show, and we’re defining the audience internally as ‘prosumer,’ because we expect a lot of the folks in attendance to work across these different industries." http://bit.ly/J1wJf8

8. SUSTAINABLE FUND-RAISING: The Robin Hood Foundation's annual gala for 4,000 is still one of the highest-profile nonprofit events in New York, but can the May 14 benefit continue to rake in eight-figure sums? Organizers are looking beyond the financial industry for support. Crain's New York: "This year, for the first time, they have a major sports star as co-chair of the event: Giants quarterback Eli Manning and his wife, Abby, who bring a new cachet and can help land donors from new circles beyond Wall Street." http://bit.ly/J27cGm
