THIS WEEK'S CALENDAR:
Thursday: Los Angeles Food & Wine festival kicks off (through Sunday)

* INCOMING *

1. GETTING THE G.O.P. TO TAMPA: The city can thank 83-year-old businessman Al Austin for bringing this summer's Republican National Convention to Tampa. Still, it was a difficult road, which began with losing out on hosting in 2004 and 2008. Politico: "They have sought and gotten big events like the Super Bowl in ’84, ’91, ’01 and ’09, hoping each time the publicity jolt — the television time, the mentions in the nation’s newspapers, the visitors’ word of mouth — will lead to an increase in external validation. They also have tried to revitalize downtown, which withered as the edges grew, by building first-rate hotels, the performing arts center, the arena and the convention center." politi.co/MuOxAA

2. NOT FAIR: The drought moving through the Midwest has taken a toll on one of summer's favorite events: the fair. New York Times: "Fair judges speak of discolored, shrunken vegetables and nearly empty categories (only one gladiola appeared at the Dane County Fair, a judge there said). But in some places, human attendance has shriveled, too — some combination, organizers say, of miserably hot weather and larger, overwhelming concerns back home on the farms. 'It was the roughest I’ve seen,' said Gary Shemanski, facilities manager at the Johnson County Fair in Iowa. There, he said, attendance fell, four rabbits perished in heat that passed 100 degrees, and a beloved, final fireworks display was canceled for fear of setting off a fire in the bone-dry county." http://nyti.ms/ORfWzf

3. DEEP-FRIED KOOL-AID: Some fair traditions, however, endure. Here's some catering inspiration for new foods on a stick. Mashable: "Each year, states up their impaled-food game with offerings more fried and bacon-wrapped than the year before. The Iowa State Fair just released its list of the 50 foods on a stick attendees can indulge in when the festivities kick off Aug. 9." http://bit.ly/MposHE

4. FASHION-FORWARD: Boutique Fashion Brokers, a global online trade show, has found a niche in the industry since launching in February. California Apparel News: "The members-only site has 180 designers from around the world and more than 600 boutiques, and it provides a digital space where designers can sell their merchandise to buyers online without the expense of either party attending a trade show." The goal is to expand the offerings and eventually become the virtual component of a live trade show. http://bit.ly/PIEFT5

5. NASCAR DEATH: Lighting strikes at a Pennsylvania race Sunday killed one fan and injured nine others. Associated Press: "Public address announcements were made before the storm and the end of the race for fans to take shelter and evacuate the grandstands, [Pocono spokesman Bob] Pleban said. Racetrack officials were reviewing the logs of when the announcements were made, he said. There was no order to evacuate the track premises." http://apne.ws/RIDWTE

* ABOUT THIS WEEKEND *

From Chicago Bureau Chief Jenny Berg: Though for awhile the severe weather was the biggest thing at Lollapalooza—the event was shut down for about two and a half hours on Saturday— there was plenty going on both on-site and at surrounding parties in Chicago this weekend. On festival grounds in Grant Park, headline acts such as the Black Keys and the Red Hot Chili Peppers took to stages sponsored by Red Bull and Bud Light. Adidas had an on-site activation that let concertgoers watch skateboarders perform feats while Sony’s “Sony Cube” showcased the company’s latest mobile devices and hosted contests for product giveaways and V.I.P. tickets. Offsite, related parties were hosted by brands such as Gilt City, which held the “Better Than Backstage” rooftop pool party on Saturday with an intimate performance from Of Monsters and Men. BMF Media Group took over two floors at the Hard Rock Hotel for the weekend to host the CK One Music Lounge, a daytime spot for artists, media, and other V.I.P. guests to hang out between sets, test out products from brands such as Clearasil, and listen to performances from artists such as Ambassadors. Starting at 10 p.m. each night, the lounge transitioned to “Rock the Vote” nights, late-night parties with open bars and performances from Dev, Little Dragon, and more. Rolling Stone was among the other companies to host off-site events, inviting guests to the Paris Club on Friday and Saturday for brunches with Belvedere cocktails, snacks and live music. Our complete coverage of the weekend will post soon.
