In attempt to fill the void that the cancellation of the Fort Lauderdale Air & Sea Show left in Broward County, Live Nation-one of the largest global producers of big concerts-pitched the idea of an annual music festival to city officials on Tuesday. The three-day springtime beachfront festival (which many are saying would be similar to West Palm Beach's Spring Fest) would feature as many as 20 acts, ranging from headliners to lesser-known artists, and promises not to cost taxpayers a dime.
The problem? The older generation of commissioners were not pleased with concert organizers' proposed lineup. Though Live Nation could not be reached for comment, Vice Mayor Charlotte Rodstrom-whose vote along with five others' represents all of Fort Lauderdale-explained that the performer slate only included techno music and hip-hop.
"I felt their presentation could have been more thorough," said Rodstrom. "We want a diverse group of entertainers, and they didn't have a proposed headliner."
Commissioner Carlton Moore said that the event producers should aim for "family and mature adults" as the target audience.
"I am not looking for a return of spring break. I am not looking for an event that would bring that type of user to the beach," he said.
At the conclusion of Tuesday's presentation, city commissioners agreed tentatively to move ahead with Live Nation, though both parties have yet to reach an agreement.
