The Miami Science Museum celebrated the opening of its "Music: Musica" exhibit with events throughout last week. The new feature in the museum offers a showcase of two exhibits, "American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music" and "Music: All Access Areas," displayed together.
"The Miami Science Museum is delighted to bring an exhibition of this caliber to South Florida, particularly due to the universal level of interest in music and the cultural relevance to the local Hispanic community," said Gillian Thomas, president and C.E.O. of the museum.
The celebration began with a media-only preview on October 22, followed by a celebrity red-carpet opening the following night. DJs Felix Sama and Pablo Yglesias, as well as the Spam Allstars, Albita, and Pitbull of the international record label BMI, provided live entertainment for the evening. Guests were also able to check out the exhibit, enjoy Latin fusion hors d'oeuvres from several local restaurants, and receive mixing lessons from the featured DJs throughout the night.
The festivities continued on Saturday with an open street festival in the museum's parking lot that included live musical performances by Grammy-nominated artist Alih Jey and others. The fair had a variety of Latin foods, community booths, giveaways, rides, and a children's activity area for attendees-who were also given a discounted ticket price for the exhibit that day.
