Founded by a group of bartenders in 2006, the Spirit Enhancers Society brought Thanksgiving weekend to a close with its inaugural S.E.S. beach bash. At the newly renovated pool deck of the Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort, where member Dante Delgado serves as resident bartender, the party attracted more than 125 locals, despite Sunday's sporadic rain showers.
"As bartenders, it's important for us to give back to the patrons and other industry professionals," said member Al Fresh of Shuckers Bar & Grill. "S.E.S. wanted to host an event that mirrored Miami's style, without all the frills that are so hard to come by in today's recession."
With a modest cover charge of $5, and complimentary cocktails courtesy of Roberto Cavalli Vodka and Cruzan Rum, guests were able to enjoy just that.
"Because of the economy, Miami Beach's nightlife has almost become intimidating," said guest Josh Whitelaw. "S.E.S has provided an approachable and affordable atmosphere for locals."
After all, "Who's better as event promoters than bartenders?" said Nick Nichols of Billy's Pub Too, one of the society's frontmen, who credits its members as being serious trade professionals.
As the weather worsened, the group moved to the hotel's on-site restaurant, Kitchen 305, for the event's bikini contest, which was accompanied by the sounds of DJ A.D. Cruze, Mas Inc., and some S.E.S. members themselves.
The Sunday affair, dubbed Miami Detox @ the Newport, will take place monthly at the hotel.
