Tapping into the popularity of reality televisionβ€”and the appeal of head-to-head competitionβ€”Broward County’s Jewish Adoption and Foster Care Options organization held its second annual Amazing Race fund-raiser Saturday night and raised $5,000 for the nonprofit. Organizers created clues that sent the teams of 80 participants to six businesses around Parkland and Coral Springs, where they completed challenges to earn their next clue.

At Scarfones Coal Fired Pizza, team members donned paper chef hats and mustaches while tossing a ball of dough into a 12-inch circle. At Sziro Jewelry, instead of carats, teams had to count real carrotsβ€”74 in allβ€”strategically placed in showcases around the store. Like the challenges on the TV show of the same name, some were a bit messy: At Dyan’s Country Kitchen, participants had to find five gummy worms hidden in a chocolate cream pie without using their hands. The event ended with all participants convening at Heron Bay Commons Clubhouse for cocktails and a slide show of photos from the evening. Members of the winning team will receive a catered dinner from Douglas K Katering.
