REMEMBERING WARNER LEROY
The death of larger-than-life restaurateur Warner LeRoy has so affected New York that even the normally snarky New York Observer has paid tribute to the impresario behind Tavern on the Green and the new Russian Tea Room. "Mr. LeRoy convinced Manhattanites that we were sexy, fun and swinging when the rest of the world wanted to dump our ass," writes Frank DiGiacomo." His establishments acted as beacons that attracted the diverse members of the city's ambitious population. And in these hothouse environments they worked, played, mingled and flirted, and formed a power structure that is still in place today." The story also describes LeRoy's funeral at Temple Emanu-El on Fifth Avenue last Monday. The event was packed with restaurant industry people, including Patroon owner Ken Aretsky, Cafe des Artistes owner George Lang, Nobu and Tribeca Grill co-owner Drew Nieporent, Le Cirque 2000's Sirio Maccioni. And the media crowd showed, up, too: Jann Wenner, Tom Brokaw, Barbara Walters, Ed Bradley, Carl Bernstein, Mort Zuckerman, Peggy Siegal and Lorne Michaels. New York magazine's much-hyped "Gay Life Now" issue includes a "Gay Power 101" list that features a few special events industry players. On the list: PR guru and Hamptons society player Peter Brown; party promoter and Chelsea Park social director Erich Conrad (the man behind B Bar's weekly Beige party); Glorious Food catering head Sean Driscoll; fashion PR firm KCD's Ed Filipowski, who handles runway shows for Helmut Lang and Marc Jacobs; and PR artist Ethan Geto of Geto & deMilly. Also on the list: columnists and frequent partygoers Michael Musto and Liz Smith.
ISABELLA ROSSELLINI: DEDICATED TO AN EVENT
Apparently neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow can keep Isabella Rossellini from an event appearance. The New York Post reported that the actress was scheduled to present an award to director Sidney Lumet at the Director's Guild of America Theater at last week's opening of the Israel Film Festival. When the limo that was sent to pick her up got caught in the snowstorm, the streetwise celeb hopped on a bus and then the subway to make it to Midtown for her scheduled appearance.
SECURITY SUGGESTION: BEWARE OF FANATICS WITH RED WINE
In the wrong guest's hand, a glass of red wine can be a wicked weapon. According to The New York Post's Page Six, as actor/producer/model Liz Hurley entered the V.I.P. room at Billy Zane's 35th birthday party at Hollywood's Sunset Room, an animal rights protester threw a glass of red wine on her white fur coat.
