2005 VMAs: Most Boring Ever?

Rolling Stone's Rob Sheffield didn't mince words in his assessment of MTV's Video Music Awards this year, held in Miami's American Airlines Arena for the second year in a row. "The August 28 telecast from Miami had to be the most boring VMA show in history," he wrote in the magazine’s September 22 issue. "The show is always a hit-or-miss affair, but it has never bombed on this scale before." Sheffield noted that ratings dropped to 8 million viewers, down from 10.3 million in 2004. He points to the lack of newsmaking, scandalous behavior as one of the problems, citing Madonna and Britney Spears' make-out session in 2003 as the last time something unpredictable happened.

Sheffield also points out that ratings for the 2003 and 2002 shows—held back here in New York—were at 10.7 million and 11.9 million viewers. So with all due respect to our friends in Florida, we’ll take this opportunity to say we bet New York’s event industry would be happy to welcome the VMAs back.
