June 18 marks the highly anticipated opening of New York City’s first Ikea store. The Swedish furniture company, famous for its modestly priced designs and food-court meatballs, aims to build buzz for its debut in Red Hook with a series of pop-up displays in Brooklyn and Manhattan over the coming week and a half. Monday saw the launch of the first one, a studio vignette at Brooklyn’s Borough Hall.A press release from the company says the Deutsch NY-conceived installations “reflect traits common between Ikea and New York.” And the major trait at work here is the absence of space. Each 400-square-foot crate illustrates how to incorporate Ikea furniture and design into a modest studio apartment. Items inside (like beds, plates, and rugs) are labeled with their name and price, and everything will be a part of the new location's inventory.

The opening of the store itself also brings the completion of Red Hook's new waterfront esplanade on the Erie Basin. Festivities for the launch of both start bright and early at 6 a.m. next Wednesday with remarks from company executives and city officials, a flag raising, and a traditional Swedish log-sawing ceremony.

In the meantime, different pop-ups are due to make appearances at Union Square on June 12, the Brooklyn Public Library on June 13, and Cadman Plaza on June 15.
