Billionaire David H. Koch made headlines today for his $100 million gift to the renovation of the New York State Theater. Jointly announced by the New York City Ballet and the New York City Opera—the theater is home to both organizations—the news comes in the middle of Lincoln Center's current renovations and is, according to the press release, the largest private capital donation in the history of the performing-arts campus. In honor of this, the building will be renamed in the fall as the David H. Koch Theater.

The funds from Koch, the co-owner of Koch Industries, will go towards the $200 million capital campaign of the City Ballet and City Opera for the refurbishment and upgrades to the concert hall and performance space. At present, the New York State Theater is in the initial phase of its renovation, slated for completion in October 2009. This includes new seating, carpets, a larger orchestra pit, and new lighting and audiovisual equipment. In other concert-hall news, the Knitting Factory is moving to Brooklyn. According to today's New York Times, the TriBeCa nightclub and music venue will relocate to Williamsburg, on the former site of Luna Lounge. The new spot on Metropolitan Avenue will be smaller than the Manhattan location, with room for 300 as opposed to 400.
