After less than a year in business, the Sports Museum of America is closing. The downtown site, which had athletes like Carl Lewis, Billie Jean King, Walt Frazier, Martina Navratilova, and Eli Manning at its opening celebration in May, will no longer be available to the public or for events. In the old Standard Oil Building at the southern end of Broadway, the 45,000-square-foot institution was the home of the Heisman Trophy and offered 8,000 square feet of dedicated event space.
Restaurant Associates, the catering and venue management firm responsible for booking events at the venue, confirmed this morning that the museum is locking its doors today and staff are removing their belongings. There is no information available now regarding the future of the site.
