While the industry continues to grapple with the relevance of New York Fashion Week in the digital world, the IMG-owned event still draws 100,000 fashion industry professionals, celebrities, socialites, photographers, and fashionistas. Runway shows take place at Spring Studios, with satellite events and parties all over the city. Fashion Week festivities are held twice a year: in February and September. Naeem Khan, La Perla, Jason Wu, and Anna Sui were among the elite designers who showed in February, along with Carolina Herrera, who announced it would be her last Fashion Week before stepping down. Brands and buyers both large and small connect at Coterie, a fashion trade show focusing on apparel, accessories, and footwear. The show, now in its 32nd year, draws American and international retailers who come to see the latest lines from established designers as well as up-and-comers. Held at the Jacob K. Javits Center, the event has traditionally taken place twice annually, but this year, host organization UBM has added a third show, Pre-Coterie, in June. Next: February 26-28, 2018

The 2018 gala highlights the upcoming “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” exhibit, which addresses the intersection of fashion and classic religious art. The West Indian American Day Carnival Association hosts the New York Caribbean Carnival, a celebration of Caribbean culture at the Brooklyn Museum grounds. This year marks the 61st edition of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, which marches up Fifth Avenue annually on the second Sunday in June. Last year’s parade sparked controversy due to its inclusion of Oscar López Rivera, who served 35 years in prison for his involvement in a militant group that committed acts of violence in the name of Puerto Rican independence. Thanks to state-of-the art technology, fans can test their skills against pro players, learn game strategy, and experience the action on the field in the 4-D movie theater, which includes special effects like weather elements and aromas and seats that recreate movement. The space also features a food court and bar from Riviera Hospitality Group that serves dishes from each of the league’s stadiums. Tickets begin at $39; discounted rates are available for groups of 20 or more, along with food and beverage and merchandise package options.
