When your company subscribes to the philosophy of "less is more"—which lingerie companies are wont to do—you can sex up an event without risking that guests will forget its purpose. After a launch party to celebrate the opening of British lingerie company Agent Provocateur's first New York boutique in SoHo, the undie company threw a sexy, louche after-party with tons of booze, nearly-naked women and cigarettes.
Produced by fashion PR company People's Revolution, the event was held at La Belle Epoque, a turn-of-the-century Parisian-style ballroom on the second floor of an East Village building. The brand's products were displayed in provocative photographs of frolicking female models in their bras, garters and thongs taken from the company's lookbook, and three lingerie-clad models mingled with guests and endured the leering gazes and nasty comments of a few men (we overhead one guest shout, "Damn, she got no ass!"). Evidently, everyone's a critic, even at a panty party.
Va Va Voom Room, a group that's known for its burlesque shows at Fez, provided the evening's entertainment. M.C. Miss Astrid introduced the performers: Amber Ray, who did a stripper version of a peacock dance; Miss Matrimony, a wedding dress-attired stripper; and Miss Bunny Love, who reverse-stripped by starting naked and then dressing up in Agent Provocateur lingerie. Vocalist Diamond Red broke up the acts with a few big band classics accompanied by a pianist, who was in turn accompanied by the occasional crash of a dropped martini glass.
