Tourists don't get much respect from New Yorkers, but at least one industry actually cares about what tourists think. The restaurant industry counts on them to stay in business, so many food business heavies gathered at the Rainbow Room to hear the announcement of Where magazine's eighth annual Visitors' Choice awards.
Decor was simple: Jay Casiano of New York Flowers & Plant Shed decorated the bars and dinner tables with lily and rose flower arrangements tied with raffia and set inside square vases filled with water and river stones. Dinner for 300 guests was served in the ballroom—the revolving dance floor was stilled—and the awards were presented during dessert. Notable guests included Drew Nieporent, Cristyne Nicholas, Mauro Maccioni of Osteria del Circo, Alex von Bidder and Julian Niccolini of the Four Seasons and Michael Imperioli of The Sopranos.
Among the winners—which were chosen by New York visitors who completed a survey in the magazine last year—were Daniel for Best Overall Dining; the Four Seasons for Best Fine Dining; Union Square Cafe for Best Service and the Rainbow Room for Best Ambiance.
