Joining the recent spate of renovated historic sites, such as the Desmond Tutu Center and the Plaza, is the Museum of American Finance. Scheduled for a grand opening in January, the new Wall Street location of the financially focused institution is a 30,000-square-foot, three-floor space inside the landmarked former headquarters of the Bank of New York. Previously known as the Museum of American Financial History, the organization exhibits financial documents and artifacts.
In moving to the new home, the museum renovated and restored some of the venue's timeworn features including the brass Palladian windows, marble and faux marble capitals, pilasters, and wainscot, and murals and lunettes from J. Monroe Hewlett. The museum also added features to make the space A.D.A. compliant. The building's former banking hall will be the main exhibition space, showcasing the room's 30-foot ceilings, marble staircase and floors, and the arched wall panels of murals that depict commerce and banking. Designed with an eye to renting this area for events, the exhibit displays will be movable. In addition to the main floor, which seats 220 or holds 400 for receptions, is the concourse-level education center, created in partnership with the National Council on Economic Education. The center, which offers projection screens and audiovisual equipment, is suitable for conferences and can be sectioned off with a movable wall; the space seats a total of 220 comfortably. Also on-site is a dedicated coat-check area and catering prep facilities. (There is no exclusive caterer for the property.)
Located a block from the New York Stock Exchange, the Museum of American Finance is currently renting its new location for corporate and nonprofit events.
