Green and Read

The New York Public Library celebrated a decade of Library Lions with decor featuring botanical elements and a bold crimson hue.

Mimi O'Connor
November 7, 2007
For 10 years, the New York Public Library has celebrated luminaries in fields ranging from literature, history, and science to the visual and performing arts at its Library Lions benefit. The institution marked the decade anniversary with an event on Monday night toasting four new Lions (Martin Scorsese, Tom Stoppard, Jhumpa Lahiri, and John Hope Franklin) and assembling many of the 40 previous honorees.

The evening included a cocktail hour in Astor Hall, a dinner and program in the library's majestic Rose Main Reading Room, and, for the first time in the event's history, the Young Lions gala, a dance party for supporters of the organization in their 20s and 30s.David E. Monn's design incorporated oversize hurricanes flanking the main entrance's stairway, enormous white spheres illuminated with red light suspended from Astor Hall's ceiling, and yards and yards of greenery, in the form of swags, wreaths, and towering hedges. Lampshades in a deep red hue adorned the reading room's smaller fixtures on the dinner tables, as well as massive hanging lights that hovered over guests.

Glorious Food served hors d'oeuvres and dinner to a crowd of guests that included Charlie Rose, New Yorker editor David Remnick, Jimmy Fallon, and Brian Grazer. The evening's proceeds support the Library's General Book Fund.
