November 10, 2016: Orlando Will Turn Pulse Nightclub Into Memorial, Thousands Protest Trump Win Day After Election, Election Night Doubles Twitter Traffic

1. ORLANDO WILL TURN PULSE NIGHTCLUB INTO MEMORIAL: The city of Orlando has announced it will buy Pulse nightclub, the site of the deadliest United States mass shooting that took place in June, and turn it into a memorial. The New York Times: “The popular gay club has been empty since June 12, when a gunman opened fire during a Latin-themed dance party, killing 49 people and wounding dozens more. The gunman was shot and killed in a shootout with the police, ending the siege. Buddy Dyer, the mayor of Orlando, said that it was important for the city to take control of the site to ensure that those killed and injured were properly honored. He said that the city was not sure what kind of memorial it wanted to create and that for the next 12 to 18 months the site would be left untouched ‘so that people from around the country and world that want to visit the site can do so.’ Since the massacre, the 4,500-square-foot building and the sign outside with the Pulse logo has drawn tourists from around the world and has also been visited by local and national politicians, including Hillary Clinton. Mr. Dyer said that he would solicit suggestions from the community and activists about the best way to proceed with creating a memorial. The city and the owner of the club have agreed to a purchase price of $2.25 million. The City Council, which must approve the purchase, is expected to vote on the matter on Monday.” http://nyti.ms/2eVI99X

2. THOUSANDS PROTEST TRUMP WIN DAY AFTER ELECTION: Thousands of people in cities and towns across the country protested Donald Trump’s presidential election win on Wednesday night. Associated Press: “From New England to heartland cities like Kansas City and along the West Coast, demonstrators bore flags and effigies of the president-elect, disrupting traffic and declaring that they refused to accept Trump's victory. Flames lit up the night sky in California cities Wednesday as thousands of protesters burned a giant papier-mache Trump head in Los Angeles and started fires in Oakland intersections. Los Angeles demonstrators also beat a Trump piñata and sprayed the Los Angeles Times building and news vans with anti-Trump profanity. One protester outside LA City Hall read a sign that simply said ‘this is very bad.’ Late in the evening several hundred people blocked one of the city's busiest freeways, U.S. 101 between downtown and Hollywood. … In Chicago, where thousands had recently poured into the streets to celebrate the Chicago Cubs' first World Series victory in over a century, several thousand people marched through the Loop. They gathered outside Trump Tower, chanting ‘Not my president!’ Police said that an estimated 1,800 to 2,000 people participated in the Chicago protests. Police reported five arrests, including two for obstructing traffic, but said there were no major incidents. A similar protest in Manhattan drew about 1,000 people. Outside Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in midtown, police installed barricades to keep the demonstrators at bay.” http://apne.ws/2fAbuaL

3. ELECTION NIGHT DOUBLES TWITTER TRAFFIC: Election night on Tuesday doubled Twitter traffic and increased Facebook usage, despite Internet traffic being down. TechCrunch: “In addition, Facebook saw an increase of almost 30% on Tuesday night, while Twitter traffic more than doubled, according to new data published by broadband network company Sandvine this morning, which tracked impact the election had on internet usage. Meanwhile, Netflix—which is typically the largest source of internet traffic in North America—saw a huge decline. Its traffic levels dropped by 25% compared with the previous day. However, Sandvine believes that those levels will return to normal tonight. The findings are based on a sample U.S. fixed access network on the East Coast that has been fairly representative of national traffic in the past, notes Sandvine. But these figures are still preliminary for the time being, and may be updated later in the day. Also during election night, total peak internet traffic was down by roughly 15% as people watched the results, instead of surfing the web, as usual. This figure also speaks to the fact that when it comes to following breaking news across the U.S., many are still turning to television over web news sources, live streams, and online TV services.” http://tcrn.ch/2fZJwZ0
