The Chicago Botanic Garden's Summer Dinner Dance
The Chicago Botanic Garden's Summer Dinner Dance

The Chicago Botanic Garden hosted its ninth annual Summer Dinner Dance on June 21. For dinner, a tent decorated by HMR Designs created a garden-within-a-garden setting. Tucked into the venue's lush Rose Garden, the tent was draped in moss silk and strung with nine birdcage chandeliers. The cages, in turn, were strung with white lilies, and pillars were wrapped in trellises.

“The concept is a dark twist on the classic holiday fête, using elements of mystery, drama, and Old Hollywood glamour. A speakeasy meets an underground masquerade in a cinematic pleasure palace, and the mood is set with a minimal palette of black and white. Finding a perfect venue is key; architectural details and grand spaces with an oversize fireplace are ideal. Then pools of smoky light are interspersed with gobos casting slatted-blind texture on the walls and floors. A lush tableau of exotic hors d’oeuvres spans the space, illuminated by tiers of candelabras. Reinterpretations of classic seasonal themes are woven into the space, such as a forest of suspended Christmas tree chandeliers, composed of blackened branches and adorned with ornaments. Entertainment is a smorgasbord of vices, including gambling, hand-rolled cigars, on-site tattooing, and private shows by shadow dancers. The soundtrack for the evening is provided by a live jazz band that performs holiday classics.”

Designed to resemble an overgrown—but elegant—Italian garden, Bulgari's intimate dinner for the launch of its Mon Jasmin Noir scent in 2011 had sounds of chirping birds, a cocoon-like grove of greenery, and smells of lemon, jasmine, and lily of the valley. Gold candelabra wrapped in vines, lush arrangements of white and green flowers in Italian terra-cotta compotes, sprigs of jasmine, and Meyer lemons on the branch formed the centerpieces on the long communal dining table.

Digital mapping on Notre Dame de la Treille was a show in itself. The mapping displayed everything from large hands appearing to sketch the building to leafy green plants sprouting out of the facade. At the end, the church lit up like a pinball machine in bright colors. Throughout the show, sound effects included church bells, ghostly-sounding choirs, and creaky doors.

For a 2009 West Elm opening in New York, event designer David Stark helped underscore the retailer’s dedication to environmental awareness by creating auction items made from packing materials. In 2012, the museum presented 'Schiaparelli & Prada: Impossible Conversations,' which explored the aesthetic similarities between designers Elsa Schiaparelli and Miuccia Prada. For the gala dinner, held in the museum's Temple of Dendur, the chairs were upholstered with many of Prada's popular prints and were complemented by bright poppies and anemones on the tables, creating a whimsical feel that mimicked both women's fashion sensibilities.
