The Fresh Air Fund's annual spring gala at Tavern on the Green had a children's theme, but there was no kidding around with the number of celebrities who turned out for the event. The event was overloaded with paparazzi, shooting celebs such as Mariah Carey, Vera Wang, Jill Hennessey, Allison Janney, Katie Couric, New York Giant Tiki Barber and the evening's M.C., Conan O'Brien. The event, which awarded "American Heroes" Wang, Barber and NBC president Jeff Zucker, was organized by Fresh Air Fund special events director Victoria Kumpuris.
Tavern on the Green erected a large tent on top of the parking lot and covered the cement with AstroTurf. Jerry Harmyk of Johnny Jupiter and Friends adorned the interior with child-themed decor that included childlike drawings on the walls and tent pole wraps and gingham tablecloths in a rainbow of bright colors. Harmyk also put together Lincoln Log centerpieces filled with grass and pastel-colored gerbera daisies surrounded by Pez dispensers and candy donated by FAO Schwarz. Plastic yellow construction hats were placed on each guests' seat to represent the construction of the summer camp the nonprofit is building in Fishkill, N.Y. Bestek Lighting and Staging shone a pretty pastiche of gobo lights on the tent ceiling, giving it a textured look as if guests were sitting under a forest of trees.
