If they suspended their disbelief, the 2,800 guests of the annual Emmy awards Governors Ball, presented by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, might have felt they'd been transported to another era. The party followed the awards ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium, with guests moving from the venue’s theater into its ballroom.
Executing the vision of ball chairman Dwight Jackson, Cheryl Cecchetto and her team at Sequoia Productions created an environment evocative of the Art Deco-era luxury liner the S.S. Normandie, a strictly aesthetic choice picked for its elegant, easy-to-read look. Sequoia hung massive mirrors over the stage and along the walls of the Shrine. White, black, blue, silver, and gold decor included illuminated columns and zodiac disks suspended from the ceiling.
On the tabletops, Mark’s Garden filled mirrored vases with lilies, roses, and hydrangeas. The menu from Patina Catering included jumbo shrimp cocktail, filet of beef Wellington, and peach Melba for dessert. Wine selections came from the Beaulieu Vineyard and Laurent-Perrier Champagne.
The Australian group Ten Tenors performed a rock-inflected classical tenor set for the crowd, including operatic arias as well as unexpected renditions of “Rawhide” and “Stayin’ Alive,” complete with John Travolta-inspired disco moves. Of course, thanks to the paparazzi, the entertainment that made the wires the next day was Desperate Housewives’ Eva Longoria’s affectionate leap into the lap of costar Ricardo Chavira.
