The multimillion-dollar nightclub Circa opened its doors on October 4 to an array of stars that included American Beauty actress Mena Suvari, boxer Lennox Lewis, Montreal Canadiens centre Saku Koivu, and local rocker Kim Mitchell. The evening was all glam, and guests wore edgy outfits to revel in the fetish theme at the three-story club.
The Bathroom Bar, inspired by club king Peter Gatien’s memories of his famous New York clubs (where, if you wanted to see everyone and everything, you hovered around the washrooms), was one of the more popular areas. The focal point of the room is—what else—a large ceramic toilet-bowl-shaped bar, complete with sterile tiled walls.
Strategically placed in the middle of the room was a specially designed barber chair, by Oddballs Kustoms, where clubbers could sit for a photo op. Said one opening-night guest, “My favourite place is actually sitting in the hallway outside the Bathroom Bar. You see everyone, and everyone can see you.” For those needing to go, the bathroom can be rented for $5,000 and includes the main dance floor. The main dance floor has unique, landmine-shaped lights designed by art director Kenny Baird, whose past clients include David Bowie and Marilyn Manson. Baird designed and created a number of art pieces throughout Circa that contribute to the fetish theme, including leather-bound crows and macabre mannequins.
Other hugely popular corners of the 55,000-square-foot mega club were the sea-inspired Fathom 22 Bar and the Sensacell Bar, where customers could amuse themselves with the light and heat sensors imbedded into the tables and bar.
The Skyy Cinema Lounge, designed by the firm AvroKo, will host feature movie nights every Friday while the Kidrobot Bar, designed by Kidrobot Dolls founder Paul Budnitz, dazzles as a toy room.
The opening attracted a predictable crowd crush, and well-groomed doormen stood watch over stairwells, monitoring numbers of the crowd and the packed upper floors. Clubbers gushed at their new play spot despite the fact that Circa was not quite ready for its unveiling: Ceilings revealed exposed wires where the light fixtures should be, and the showcase women's washroom had to be closed due to flooding—leaving an unpleasant odour and an unplanned dose of realism to the nearby Washroom Bar.
Circa will be available for corporate functions, with rooms or entire floors available for rental. The Skyy Cinema Lounge booking fee is $3,500, and the Kidrobot Bar is $2,500. For larger events, the second floor can be rented for $3,000 and the third floor for $8,000; the entire building can be had for $14,000. All rentals include bartenders, barbacks, and the in-house sound, light, and video systems.
