Flower District to Relocate

Led by the Flower Market Associations of NYC, New York's flower district—the supplier of tons of flowers for special events—is looking for a new home, according to Crain's New York. The group, which is being driven out of its current home on West 28th between Broadway and Seventh Avenue by booming residential complexes, rent hikes and street congestion, has its eye on a few sites for its impending move. Among the possibilities: the site of former event space the Waterfront (formerly the Tunnel nightclub). The 1.1 million square-foot space—called the Atlas Terminal—occupies the entire block between 11th and 12th Avenues and 27th and 28th Streets, and is owned by the Waterfront NY Realty Group.

The article added: "the district has withered to almost half its historical size. Customers such as event planners, hotels, restaurants and retail florists are trading fancy blooms for cheaper stuff, and some are forgoing flowers altogether. Growers are making deals to deliver their products directly to retail florists, effectively eliminating the wholesaler." The district hopes to have a deal finalized by the end of this summer, and to move into its new space by July 2003.
