Being honored at the Landmarks Conservancy's benefit has its good and bad points. Yes, you're being honored, but the nonprofit--which bills itself as "New York's preeminent historic preservation organization"--doles out awards that come with a certain connotation. When the group deems people "Living Landmarks," it suggests that they have given something to the city; it also sounds like they're old.
That didn't stop David Brown, Philippe de Montebello, Gordon Parks, Laurance and David Rockefeller, and Gloria Steinem from accepting the honor, and they were surrounded by fellow landmarks at the event. The M.C. for the evening was 1996 honoree Liz Smith, and 1996 honoree Peter Duchin provided the evening's entertainment.
The benefit started with cocktails in the Terrace Room, where guests--who paid $1,000 or $500 for tickets--mixed with past honorees Helen Gurley Brown, Al Hirschfeld, Sirio Maccioni and George Wolfe. Later, they headed upstairs to the Grand Ballroom, where Andrew Pascoe Flowers had laid out lush centerpieces of roses and lilies.
