Kids Paint Centerpieces for Benefit Lunch

Decorations inspired and produced by children helped by Safe Horizon gave guests a connection to the organization's purpose.

May 16, 2006
Nearly 900 guests attended Safe Horizon's annual Champion awards luncheon, which featured centerpieces hand-painted by New York children. Held at the 69th Regiment Armory, the event honored the nonprofit's continued aid to abuse victims. "I came up with the idea of having the kids paint the leaves, because I knew that everyone wanted the children to play a starring role in the event," said designer Matthew David Hopkins of Matthew David Events. To expedite the project, Materials for Arts donated kits containing paper leaves and decorating materials to each Safe Horizon shelter in the city. Three weeks later, children from the shelters had painted 1,500 leaves, which Hopkins used in centerpieces. To show off Safe Horizon's new corporate logo, Hopkins incorporated its colors-orange, yellow, and copper-into various.phpects of the decor, including tablecloths, lighting, Chinese takeout boxes, and floral designs. Prior to the luncheon, a cocktail reception was held in the entry room of the armory; it featured a two-foot-wide orange, peach, and white floral sphere surrounded by floating orange and white roses suspended inside a custom, 4- by 4-foot plexiglass cube. The sphere, made up of daisies, carnations, roses, and hydrangea, was the focal point of the room and was flanked by two floral columns that consisted of the same flowers.

Law & Order: SVU's B. D. Wong hosted the luncheon and awards ceremony in the venue's main room, where rows of white, yellow, orange, and bronze bengaline tablecloths topped the tables.

Taste Caterers placed Chinese takeout boxes containing cold sesame noodles at each place setting; guests could add grilled shrimp, coconut and coriander chicken, grilled flank steak, or grilled tofu to their noodles from a lazy Susan. For dessert, Taste offered kid-friendly vanilla cupcakes with orange sprinkles and creamy, orange-flavored milkshake shots with a chocolate straw.

“Dried flowers are coming back this year after a long hiatus. They will be popular for design due to their longevity, deep rich colors and added visual texture. Among the many popular dried flowers making a comeback are mini pampas grass, star grass, avena and helichrysum, which will be a popular species that designers are leaning towards integrating into arrangements with live flowers.” —Seth Pearsoll, director of design, shows and events for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (Pictured: The Samantha from East Olivia's spring collection)
