Tribeca Ball Has Glam Bohemian Look

April 16, 2003
Touches of bohemian glamour—like white chair covers decorated with a sketch of an ornate chair—played into the romantic La Boheme-inspired decor at the New York Academy of Art's Tribeca Ball. Moulin Rouge director Baz Luhrmann, who directed the opera on Broadway, co-hosted the black-tie benefit (hence the theme), which drew guests from the art, fashion and film industries, including Luhrman buddy Nicole Kidman, to Gotham Hall.
More decor inspired by the opera included bright red lights that saturated the space, the word "L'Amour" spelled out in red lights above the dining area (like the sign used onstage for La Boheme) and tapestry-sized replicas of the chair covers hung on the walls. And for easy and effective branding, the bar was created by stacking branded boxes from event sponsor Hermes.

Olivier Cheng Catering and Events served a three-course dinner on pretty white plates trimmed in a gold band. The main course—truffled halibut en papillote—was presented with a unique spin: The fish was served in the parchment paper it was baked in, and caterwaiters cut each envelope open at the table, then drizzled truffle butter sauce over the top.
