When polyester was king, platform shoes were just called shoes, and shag rugs were in every home—that was the 1970's, the inspiration for the fourth annual Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) gala fund-raiser, this year called "Groove!"
The POGO committee, led by Vanessa Yakobson and Gillian Lachance, worked with sponsors Karen Jacobs of Up & Coming Events, who helped plan the gala, and decor designer and provider Eric Aragon of the Aragon Group to create two event spaces for the evening. The Governor's Ballroom of the Liberty Grand, the venue sponsor who also catered the event, was the site of the dinner, and it was decorated with upscale 70's flair. Flamboyant gerbera daisies in pink, green, and orange were set in tall bud vases on each table, while silver chair covers and brightly coloured votive holders accented the black linens.
The second space was for the after-party and silent auction, which took place in the Artifacts room and had a Saturday Night Fever disco appeal. Attendees danced to the sounds of the Travoltas, a 70's cover band (of course), and DJs from King and Segal Entertainment. The decor made a huge impact, with six-foot fuchsia pedestals supporting mannequin torsos with feathered wigs and groovy lighting. Even the silent auction tables got a jolt of retro with green and white feather arrangements and torsos in electric blue with daisy accents.
