'Into the Heart of Meetings: Basic Principles of Meeting Design' by Eric de Groot and Mike van der Vijver
'Into the Heart of Meetings: Basic Principles of Meeting Design' by Eric de Groot and Mike van der Vijver
"This provides a wonderful introduction to meeting design," says Adrian Segar of Vermont's Conferences That Work. "Unlike the many books on the profession that emphasize logistics, Eric and Mike's book delves into core questions about meeting design, such as uncovering desired outcomes, working with meeting owners, and what to do to create truly innovative meetings that deliver results. In addition, the wealth of real-life examples included make this a fascinating and thought-provoking read."

'Who Moved My Cheese: An Amazing Way to Deal With Change In Your Work and In Your Life' by Spencer Johnson
'Who Moved My Cheese: An Amazing Way to Deal With Change In Your Work and In Your Life' by Spencer Johnson
Howard Givner, executive director of the Event Leadership Institute, says that this book is "broadly applicable, and short and easy to read. It provides a great parable for learning how to take curve balls in stride and not dwelling or complaining about what's happened to you. The proactive, 'let's move forward' approach is one that every planner should adopt, as things rarely go as planned in live events, and it's important to be able to roll with the punches. It helps you go into an event with the mindset that unexpected changes will happen, so when they do you're not thrown off guard."

'Marketing Your Event Planning Business: A Creative Approach to Gaining the Competitive Edge' by Judy Allen
"I enjoyed reading this book by Judy Allen," says Eva Gouldbourne, a wedding and event planner at Chicago's Diamond Events. "This book has many specific examples of how to get the kind of business you want and avoid doing things that will make you stand out negatively."

'Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking' by Susan Cain
'Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking' by Susan Cain
A self-proclaimed introvert, Adam Sloyer is the managing director of New York's Sequence Events and president-elect of ISES New York's Metro Chapter. Of this Susan Cain book, he says: "I found this to be a fascinating read, regardless of whether you consider yourself to be an introvert or an extrovert—and after reading this, you may have a different opinion. Quiet dispels many of the standard biases against introverts and also showcases some of the competitive advantages.  Yes, events is a 'people business,' but I found this book to reinforce how introverts can be just as successful."

'Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business' by Danny Meyer
'Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality in Business' by Danny Meyer
David Beahm of New York's David Beahm Design recommends Setting the Table by Danny Meyer. "I was having problems justifying one of my managers' style of management. He wasn't very nice and I didn't like it," Beahm says. "I found Mr. Meyer's concept of fear-based versus trust-based control very validating as to how I want to run my business. If you trust and empower people to do a good job, they will."

'Corporate Excellence: How to Maximize Long-term Productivity & Profits by Aligning Purpose, Culture & People' by Jim Harris
'Corporate Excellence: How to Maximize Long-term Productivity & Profits by Aligning Purpose, Culture & People' by Jim Harris
France Langan, sales director of Chicago's Holiday Inn Mart Plaza, recommends checking out this title. "It's an easy read, designed for the busy executive," says Langan. "I think for me, it validated how I try to motivate and work. It also reminded me of how easy business can be if you focus on the individual goals at hand. And, get the right people involved to help. Never do it alone."

Tahira Endean, the director of creative and production at Cantrav Services Inc. in Vancouver, says that all of Michael Gelb's books are must-reads, including this one about Leonardo da Vinci, which "includes a great story about catering in that century." Gelb, she says "truly is a Renaissance man, and I am always inspired by these books. I've read each more than once, and I've given them out to friends between 14 and 70 years of age. I consider these mandatory reading if you want to consider how to live and create better."

'Think and Grow Rich: Your Key to Financial Wealth and Power' by Napoleon Hill
Junou Bernadin, a projects administrator at Food for the Poor in Florida, says that this book by Napoleon Hill is a "must-read for any professional." The lessons it contains are more complex than the title suggests, she says, explaining that it covers the process of overcoming limitations and "striving for the very best. This is what all event planners do. We strive for the best the overall 'wow' factor."

"I found this book so helpful when I took my first classes for event management during college, and I still use it as reference from time to time."

4. Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles Gala

Los Angeles
#4 Benefit (up from #5)
The museum’s annual gala celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2014 and also marked two other milestones: the appointment of a new director, Philippe Vergne, and a fund-raising effort that pushed its endowment to more than $100 million. Diana Ross performed for the 850 guests, and the evening raised $2.4 million. But as much as it’s known for being a reliably strong fund-raiser, guests have come to expect creative production that, appropriately for an institution with its mission, challenges and entertains its guests. “The unique part of the MoCA Gala is that the format changes every year depending on the artistic direction,” says Paula Morehouse, the museum’s development and special event manager. “On occasion, the creative lead is taken by an artist—for example Rob Pruitt in 2013, Marina Abramovic in 2011, and Doug Aitken in 2010—and other times the decor and concept is imagined by the event chairs and event producer.” The event also partners with what Morehouse calls “significant brands,” such as last year’s presenting sponsor Louis Vuitton. Another change over the years: Even as society seems to be moving in a more casual direction, the gala is not. Once requiring only cocktail attire, the event is now a black-tie affair. 1. North American International Auto Show

Detroit
#1 Trade Show
When the show debuted in 1989, no American auto show claimed to be an international event.  So Detroit did, turning a regional show that had existed since 1907 into the attraction that it is today. The event truly has become international, drawing nearly 5,200 media outlets from 63 countries, and it gives the press much to write about: The show boasted 50 vehicle introductions this year and 60 introductions in 2013. It’s also a consumer draw, with a total ticketed attendance of more than 800,000. “There were naysayers who said, ‘That’s impossible. You’re never going to become that. It’s got to be Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York,’” says Rod Alberts, executive director of the show. “Now we’re number one.” For its 25th anniversary, Alberts says organizers played down the celebration, preferring to focus on the future rather than be nostalgic about the past. It honored a group of its founders from the Detroit Auto Dealers Association and then moved on with the show. Next: January 12-25, 2015

1. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
1. Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

New York
#1 Festival, Parade & Holiday Event
People have been lining the streets of New York to watch the parade since 1924, when it was known as the Macy’s Christmas Parade and used animals from the Central Park Zoo rather than the larger-than-life balloons seen today. The parade has become an American institution, with more than 3.5 million people watching the parade in person and another 50 million tune in at home. “While many elements of the production have remained the same over the past eight decades, our goal has been to protect the integrity of the march, while also incorporating new elements and extending the life of this event beyond Thanksgiving Day,” says Amy Kule, the parade’s executive producer. Innovations include the Blue Sky Gallery series, in which artists such as Jeff Koons, Keith Haring, Takashi Murakami, and Tim Burton have created balloons for the parade, and promotions outside of New York that include in-store events, scavenger hunts, and special tours of parade memorabilia. The parade’s website and mobile app offer behind-the-scenes content, animated videos, and an Elf-o-Matic feature that allows fans to turn themselves into a parade balloon. Even the task of inflating the giant balloons the night before the parade has become a tradition—drawing more than a million spectators. Next: November 27, 2014

From its start in 1970 with 300 people and a handful of panels to today’s juggernaut that has more than 130,000 people filling the San Diego Convention Center for 700 hours of programming, the convention has come a long way. The format for the event has stayed the same; it’s the scope that has exploded. Hollywood was a partner from the start—Frank Capra was an early attendee—and the event has become a crucial promotional stop for film and TV series. “We try to produce the type of convention we would want to attend ourselves,” spokesman David Glanzer says. “We’re all fans, we love comic books, movies, toys, games, television, generally popular art. We may not all like the same things, but we can appreciate the diversity of what each of us finds interesting and I think that transfers to the event itself.” Next: July 9-12, 2015
