Every year since 1978, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts selects five honorees who have made outstanding contributions to the performing arts. They are feted in a ceremony at the Kennedy Center Opera House, with the President and First Lady in attendance. In 2016, the honorees were Al Pacino, the Eagles, Mavis Staples, James Taylor, and Martha Argerich. Hosted by Stephen Colbert, the show included appearances from Bill Clinton, Sheryl Crow, Sean Penn, Bonnie Raitt, Yo-Yo Ma, Garth Brooks, Don Cheadle, Palcido Domingo, Juanes, and Vince Gill. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts awarded the 19th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to Bill Murray at a gala that was presented by sponsor Capital One and held October 23 at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. Now in its ninth year, BET Honors celebrates the gifts and contributions of five African-American leaders. This year's honorees were filmmaker and TV producer Lee Daniels, businesswoman Mellody Hobson, former U.S. attorney general Eric H. Holder Jr., singer Patti LaBelle, and music executive Antonio "L.A." Reid. Hosted by Arsenio Hall, the gala was held March 5 at the Warner Theatre, and televised nine days later on BET. Presented by the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Will on the Hill drew about 800 guests to Sidney Harman Hall to see members of Congress and other Washington notables perform the original play Heavy Lies the Head. The largest cast to date was led by Emmy-winning actor Reg E. Cathey, as well as Felicia Curry and Tom Story, who were joined on stage by members of Congress including Chris Coons, Suzanne Bonamici, and Gerry Connolly. The performance opened with a group from Westfield High School performing selections from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which they learned as a part of the company’s Text Alive! Program. The documentary festival from the American Film Institute featured 93 films from 30 countries, and AT&T returned as the presenting sponsor. About 12,100 attended the festival, which took place at venues throughout the city. Notable happenings at the festival included premieres of Zero Days and Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You (which was attended by Lear), while filmmaker Werner Herzog was named the Charles Guggenheim Symposium honoree, and Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise received the Audience Award for Best Feature. U.S. Representatives Jim Himes and Nita Lowey addressed the Newtown Spotlight Screening audience at the Newseum just hours after Democrats concluded a sit-in on the floor of the House of Representatives. Nearly 76,000 people attended at least one concert during the 2016 DC Jazz Festival—a 19 percent increase from 2015. This year's event, which took place June 10 to 19 in various locations, included 142 performances that included Kurt Elling, Maceo Parker, and Regina Carter Quartet. Produced by Events DC, the festival, also known as DC JazzFest, this year had a salutes to Howard University Jazz, as well as Singin’ in the Parks, a free series celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service. The 11th annual Capital Fringe Festival for the independent arts scene took place July 7 to 31 at several venues in Washington. This year, the festival expanded its Audience Awards to include two new prizes: Community Connector and the Medal of Epicness. Theater Mania is the awards sponsor for the festival, which is produced by the nonprofit Capital Fringe and is attended by about 40,000 people every year. Next: July 2017

This year, the festival received a record number of submissions: more than 1,300 from more than 40 countries. From those submissions, 131 films were selected for the 11-day event that included film screenings, Q&As, filmmaker workshops, and a screenplay competition. The 34th annual Rammy Awards, held June 12 at Walter E. Washington Convention Center and attended by about 2,300 people, for the first time used 30-second video clips of honorees sharing why they got involved with restaurants, which guests could access through a silent disco. The annual award show from the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington gave out 22 prizes, including Chef of the Year, which went to Scott Drewno of the Source by Wolfgang Puck. The 11th annual edition of the show, which took place December 3 and 4 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, included appearances from celebrity chefs Jacques Pepin, Tom Colicchio, Carla Hall, and Duff Goldman. About 15,000 people were estimated to attend the event, which is produced by E.J. Krause & Associates. Held April 4 at the National Building Museum, the event had more than 140 participating restaurants to raise money to end child hunger. Sponsors included Citi, Sysco, Food Network, OpenTable, LG, and Food Should Taste Good. Bryan Voltaggio was the event's chef chair this year, while Tiffany MacIsaac was the pastry chair. Although Winter Storm Jonas caused Sips & Suppers to be pushed back from January 23 to January 30, about 1,200 people attended the event, which raised more than $511,000 for DC Central Kitchen and Martha’s Table, the two organizations that produce the event. New in 2016, three of the Newseum's glass elevators were outfitted with bars and mixologists featuring specialty cocktails. V.I.P. guests also enjoyed an exclusive lounge and indulged in a selection of beverages and food. Each V.I.P. guest departed with the cookbook of an acclaimed chef, selecting from April Bloomfield's A Girl and Her Greens, David Guas's Grill Nation, Steven Satterfield's Root to Leaf, or Alice Waters's My Pantry. Attracting more than 12,000 people this year, the Maryland festival produced by Trigger Street increased the amount of products offered by about 20 percent. The event had more than 200 exhibits spread across 65,000 square feet and raised about $10,000 for the Spirit of Hope Children’s Foundation. Next: April 29-30, 2017

#6 Food, Wine & Restaurant Industry Event
About 50,000 people attended the 28th annual Taste of DC, which takes over Pennsylvania Avenue as one of the largest annual food festivals in the mid-Atlantic region. Held on October 8 and 9, the event had 60 participating restaurants. Celebrity chefs who made appearances included José Andrés and Bryan Voltaggio, who were at the MGM Lounge to promote their respective new restaurants at MGM National Harbor. Meanwhile, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut retained his winner's title at the sixth annual Ben’s Chili Bowl’s World Chili Eating Championship. Next: October 2017

#7 Food, Wine & Restaurant Industry Event (new to the list)
The Giant National Capital Barbecue Battle, now in its 24th year, is a combination of a barbecue competition, fund-raiser, and entertainment festival with live music and family activities. It drew more than 100,000 in June, when barbecue restaurants from across the country compete in several contests. This year, Giant Food became a title sponsor, with other sponsors including Pepsi, Lay's, PNC Bank, and Heineken. The event also raises money for the USO Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore and the Capital Area Food Bank. Next: June 24-25, 2017

#8 Food, Wine & Restaurant Industry Event (new to the list)
About 600 people attended the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's fifth annual Chefs for Equality, which brought together more than 100 of the region's chefs and mixologists and raised $235,000 for the cause. Held at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C., on October 26, the event had nearly 60 tasting stations with savory treats and 20 pastry stations. There were the eight personal chef tables where guests had the opportunity to dine with celebrity chefs and enjoy a lavish five-course meal in the middle of the evening's action. One table served as a tribute to the late chef Michel Richard. Amaryllis, Inc. Floral & Event Design created many of the chefs tables and the event's "Equality Street USA" theme. There were live and silent auctions, and comedian Dana Goldberg served as event emcee. Next: October 2017

#1 Holiday Event
On March 28, the First Family hosted the 138th annual White House Easter Egg Roll, which was attended by more than 35,000 people who gathered on the South Lawn for games, stories, cooking demonstrations, sports, and the traditional egg roll. This year's theme was “Let’s Celebrate!” which highlighted the initiatives of first lady Michelle Obama's "Let’s Move!" initiative. Idina Menzel, Silentó, and Echosmith were among the performers at the event. Five souvenir eggs designed by graphic designer and blogger Joy Cho were given to children at the event. Four eggs had stamped signatures of the President and First Lady on the back, while one egg had stamped “signatures” and “paw prints” of the the First Family's dogs Bo and Sunny on the back. #2 Holiday Event
Taking place every July 4 on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the patriotic event with music and fireworks celebrated its 36th year as a live broadcast on PBS. Capital Concerts and Washington PBS affiliate WETA co-produce the event. Although producers drew criticism (and later apologized) for televising some footage from a previous year's telecast without properly labeling it as prerecorded, the show, hosted by Tom Bergeron, had several highlights. They included a tribute to the U.S.O.'s 75th anniversary and the National Park Service's 100th anniversary, as well as performances from Smokey Robinson, Gavin DeGraw, Sutton Foster, and the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jack Everly. #3 Holiday Event
The 94th annual National Christmas Tree Lighting, held December 1 at the White House's Ellipse at President's Park, capped off a year of celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, which co-produces the event with the National Park Foundation and Bounce AEG. Hallmark Channel and DirecTV 4K Ultra HD televised the event on December 5. Although the event, also known as the Pageant of Peace Ceremony, is free and open to the public, most of the 17,000 attendees gain access by entering an online lottery in October. Performers at this year's event included Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, James Taylor, Kelly Clarkson, Chance the Rapper, Marc Anthony, Yolanda Adams, and the Lumineers. Next: December 2017

#4 Holiday Event
Co-hosted by actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise, the National Memorial Day Concert took place May 29 on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. PBS aired a live telecast of the event, which honors military personnel who lost their lives. This year's concert included appearances from former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and entertainers Esai Morales, S. Epatha Merkerson, the Beach Boys, Katharine McPhee, and Renée Fleming. Held November 10 at the Washington Hilton’s Columbia Ballroom, Fight for Children's boxing-themed benefit raises money for early childhood education in the metropolitan areas of Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. This year’s event, attended by about 1,900 people, had Under Armour as a presenting sponsor, and raised a record $5.2 million. The event showcased a number of boxing matches, including the IBF/USBA featherweight championship bout between Daniel Franco and Derrick Murray; a Muay Thai fight between Jovan Davis and Terrell Hobbs; and a middleweight bout between Ernesto Berrospe and Isiah Seldon. New in 2016, the Fight Night Party Deck had a reception, interactive elements, tickets to the main event, access to the after-party, and a designated area with a full bar and a buffet-style dinner. #3 Benefit
Produced by and benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the 29th annual event held March 12 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center introduced a Young Professionals ticket option this year, allowing access to the gala starting at 9 p.m., as well as balcony seating, drinks, dessert, and viewing of the mission moment and entertainment. Rock band Barenaked Ladies and comedian Kathleen Madigan provided the entertainment for the 2,000 guests. The event raised $3.2 million. TV personalities and spouses Craig Melvin and Lindsay Czarniak will host the 2017 gala, which will include entertainment from singer Andy Grammer and comedian Jim Gaffigan. Next: March 11, 2017

Raising about $2 million this year, the event held on June 5 had the theme "How Sweet It Is: A Tribute to Marvin Gaye." Whoopi Goldberg hosted the concert with performances from Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Leslie Odom, Jr., Jussie Smollett, Mary Wilson, Valerie Simpson, Andra Day, and Ledisi. Also new this year was the presentation of the first Kennedy Center Awards for Human Spirit to Wallis Annenberg, who received the Distinguished Philanthropist Award, and Theaster Gates, who received the Citizen Artist Award. About 2,110 people attended the performance at the Kennedy Center's Concert Hall, while more than 800 were at the gala fund-raiser dinner preceding the show. Boeing was the event's premier sponsor. The year’s Celebrate Every Breath Gala: A Grand Chefs Event, presented by sponsor CIM Group, brought together 320 of Washington’s corporate and community leaders to experience cuisine from about 30 leading chefs in the Washington area. Held on November 13 at the JW Marriott Washington, D.C., the event's opening reception had restaurant tasting stations with specialty cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, as well as a silent auction. Glass Projects Resource and EagleBank were among the event's prominent sponsors. Former Marriott executive Kathleen Matthews served as emcee of the gala, which presented the Hitchcock Humanitarian Award to Robert J. Beall, Ph.D., former president and C.E.O. of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Next: Fall 2017

The 22nd Prevent Cancer Foundation's Annual Spring Gala, held March 11 at the National Building Museum, had the theme of "La Vie En Rose" and honored France, with France ambassador Gérard Araud serving as honorary patron and giving remarks. The gala's decor, which included an 11-foot Eiffel Tower replica in the center bar area, was designed by David Tutera, who is a member of the foundation’s board and attended the event. Other highlights include an artist who live-painted at the event, and can-can dancers who circulated throughout the cocktail hour. The event drew 900 guests and raised $1.5 million. In conjunction with the National Park Service’s Centennial Celebration, the Trust for the National Mall’s ninth annual luncheon highlighted the next 100 years of the National Mall, where the event was held on April 28. Scandal co-star Bellamy Young, who serves as ambassador for the trust, emceed the luncheon, and National Park Service director John Jarvis received the History, Heroes, and Hope Award. The event raised $1.3 million to help restore and improve the National Mall. In 2017, for the 10th anniversary of the partnership with the park service, the trust will host an evening gala, the Ball for the Mall, instead of the luncheon, recalling its former Ball on the Mall event. The 10th annual event—held April 15 at at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C.—raised money to support children and families through care and research. The black-tie event, held on October 15 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, is the culmination of a two-day celebration of Italian-American culture. About 1,400 people attended the 41st annual gala, which was produced by RGI Events, while the weekend overall attracted more than 2,500 guests. Actor Joe Piscopo and National Italian American Foundation president John M. Viola hosted the gala, and honorees included sibling filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo; football star Franco Harris; and singer Tony Renis, who gave his first live performance in 20 years. On October 6 at DAR Constitution Hall, the 75th anniversary of the United Service Organizations was celebrated at the nonprofit's annual gala, which honors the nation's military families and recognizes U.S.O. supporters and volunteers. On October 14, Meridian International Center presented its 48th annual fund-raising event at its Washington headquarters. Attended by about 800 people, include several ambassadors, the gala's Orient Express-inspired decor was created by Syzygy, with flowers donated by FTD. Specific elements that played on the luxury travel theme involved a rotating conveyor “wheel” in the outside garden offering guests choices of fresh french fries and sweet potato fries from caterer Design Cuisine; luggage accessories and leather furniture throughout the event space; and a dinner menu that had courses labeled as “All Aboard,” “En Route,” and “Arrival." Since Paris was one of the most popular depots on the Orient Express, the dance tent was transformed into a Moulin Rouge-style setting, complete with marquee letters spelling out the word "Meridian." The gala, held April 29 at the 1,000-person Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, paid tribute to the late David Bowie. TalkingTree Creative spearheaded the "Bowie Ball" production, which included massive video projections of Bowie, guest of honor Septime Webre, and a simulation of a starry night with a rotating planet Mars. Held May 13 at the Phillips Collection and attended by about 450 people, the spring gala had the theme "Patterns of Beauty East-West, A Salute to Qatar," which paid tribute to the impact of arabesque on modern art. The museum was in between exhibitions, which allowed empty gallery space to be transformed into themed decor, such as a tented ceiling and a fountain. House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, along with other members of Congress, united for a friendly competitive cook-off at the 34th annual March of Dimes Gourmet Gala, held May 17 at the National Building Museum. U.S. senators, representatives, and their guests participated as celebrity chefs, competing in six categories of achievement. In lieu of a seated dinner, the 650 attendees enjoyed additional time participating in tasting of the cuisine and networking with other guests. The event, which raised more than $1 million, attracted about 90 corporate sponsors, including BNSF, Mars, Volkswagen, Wine Institute, Chevron, and Microsoft. All proceeds of the event support March of Dimes programs and research aimed at improving the health of babies by preventing premature birth, birth defects, and infant mortality. Next: May 23, 2017

Held at the Kennedy Center's Opera House, the gala benefit is the launch of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s annual engagement at the Kennedy Center. The event's proceeds support Ailey's programs in the Washington area, including the creation of new works, arts-in-education activities, and scholarships for dance students to attend the Ailey School in New York. For the first time since it began in 1994, Knock Out Abuse Against Women's annual gala separated from the male-centric, boxing-theme Fight Night. The two fund-raisers used to be held on the same night at different venues, coming together for a joint after-party, but this year, due to scheduling conflicts, Knock Out Abuse took place on November 3 at the Ritz-Carlton, Washington, D.C., a week before Fight Night. About 525 people attended the gala, which raised $500,000 and had decor from Events by Andre Wells. The fund-raisers will reunite for the 2017 editions. Next: November 2, 2017

Held October 29 at the Four Seasons Hotel Washington, D.C., the 16th annual gala benefited expanding oncology programs and the newly renovated Sibley Memorial Hospital. Stephanie and Dan Lennon chaired the sold-out event, which was attended by 320 people, and raised more than $800,000, including $70,000 in a mobile bidding opportunity for Sibley's pediatric radiation oncology program. Held June 11 at the Washington Hilton, the 29th annual Bark Ball welcomed more than 1,000 guests and about 500 dogs in support of the Humane Rescue Alliance, formerly known as the Washington Humane Society. The black-tie gala raised more than $580,000, and included celebrity guests Bob Dole and Elizabeth Dole, as well as Washington Redskins players Kirk Cousins and Dustin Hopkins. The Emanuel J. Friedman Philanthropies and the Friedman-French Foundation returned as the Canine Champion Sponsor. More than 8,000 people attended the Smithsonian Washington Craft Show, which is produced by the Smithsonian Institute and was held April 21 to 24 at the National Building Museum. New in 2016 was an installation of 12 glass sculptures by artist Dale Chihuly; it was the first time these sculptures had been on display in the Washington area. The 141st annual Preakness Stakes horse race, held on May 21, was one for the event's record books. Champion horse Exaggerator’s upset victory capped a record-breaking day at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, where a crowd of 135,256 attended the 14-race program. The previous record was set in 2015, when 131,680 watched American Pharoah win the Preakness on his way to a Triple Crown sweep. In addition, the handle (the total amount of money bet) was $94 million, which eclipsed the 2005 record of $91 million. The event included Budweiser InfieldFest, which showcased musicians and bands, had two stages, and featured the Mug Club—the festival's upgraded experience that gives access to all party areas, with beer and merchandise giveaways included. More than 80,000 people attended the Quicken Loans National golf tournament, presented by the Tiger Woods Foundation June 23 to 26 at the Congressional Country Club. Billy Hurley III—a Naval Academy graduate who has a home in nearby Annapolis—won the tournament. More than 4,000 fans took part in Quicken Loans Shot For Heroes leading up to and through the tournament by taking a swing at a hole-in-one, while raising money for charity. Held July 16 to 24 at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, the 48th annual Citi Open attracted about 72,000 people. The tournament, which benefits the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation, also included the Toki Highball Experience Craft Cocktail Happy Hour and a tailgate gathering. New to the triathlon this year was the Military Challenge, which honored military veterans on the 15th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The 10th annual fund-raising event, presented by and benefiting the Human Rescue Alliance (formerly known as the Washington Humane Society), took place April 23 at the Grand Hyatt Washington, and raised about $400,000. New this year, Rent the Runway provided all the women's clothing and provided fittings for event participants, while CityCenterDC sponsored the men's clothing. More than 800 guests attended this year's fund-raiser for the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts's arts education and community programs. The event, which raised a record $1.58 million, was held September 16 at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia. The gala celebrated the centennial of the National Park Service with themed decor provided by Design Foundry, catering by Design Cuisine, and flowers by Karin's Florist. Former president George W. Bush, Laura Bush, and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell were among the notable attendees.
