It's often said, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." And that was the message the Orlando Union Rescue Mission, a transitional house for women with kids, sought to instill in its residents with a special luncheon. The organization honored more than 40 mothers living in the temporary housing facility with a three-hour celebration designed to entertain and inspire.
Paula Wyatt of Anything is Posh-Able Events transformed a typical gymnasium into a sunny citrus grove featuring abundance of lime green, lemon yellow, and sunset orange decor elements-including the fruits themselves. Each table highlighted one of three citrus goodies with sparkling fruit-patterned linens from Kirby Rentals and featured high-profile, grove-inspired centerpieces using greenery such as bear grass, orange leaves, and willow branches. As each guest arrived they were welcomed with orange blossom leis and escorted down a bright orange carpeted entryway toward the dining area. The space had been cleverly divided into two separate areas, creating a welcoming area for attendees to mingle with fellow residents and another space for brunch.
Guests were pampered with a complete pasta feast provided by Olive Garden including signature salad, bread sticks, and chicken Parmesan. In addition, cupcakes in citrus hues were arranged on tower displays, courtesy of Apple Spice Junction Catering. The women were also presented with orange, yellow, and lime green parasols and fans to encourage them to tap into the whimsical side of themselves and celebrate motherhood.
"These women are reshaping their lives in a real way, every day. They are learning new skills, finding jobs, and taking care of their children," said Wyatt. "They are making the best of every situation, so this event is intended to uplift them and encourage them on their path."
While the brunch was going on, the women's children participated in a three-hour safari day camp. They were separated into four groups according to age and participated in games such as a safari-themed scavenger hunt and water balloon war.
As the lucky ladies and volunteers departed, they were given one last memento-a simple white wineglass filled to the brim with candies in, of course, citrus colors.
