Meeting- and workspace-provider Convene officially opened a new location this March. Convene Hamilton Square is situated in downtown D.C. and boasts almost 80,000 square feet of co-working, meeting, and event space one block from the White House. The design-forward venue is available for small meetings and full buyouts for as many as 300 guests. There are six meeting rooms, including the Forum, and a divisible space that can accommodate up to 259 guests for theater-style events and 156 classroom style. The Hamilton Boardroom can seat 14, while Gallery East can accommodate 150 for receptions and Gallery West can accommodate as many as 120 guests. The South Hub can hold 134 for theater-style events, the North Hub can accommodate 124 theater style, and the Central Hub can accommodate 104 theater style.

D.C.'s Trendy New Event Space Isn't Just for Golfers

Restaurateur Ashok Bajaj closed his long-running downtown Italian restaurant Bibiana for a refresh, dubbing its new incarnation Modena, with executive chef John Melfi at the helm. The new look debuted in September, with a color scheme of teal blue and soft gray. Photos on the wall spotlight Italian vistas, with a collage of the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon in the 12-seat semiprivate dining room. That's not the only option for groups: a 513-square-foot private dining room includes two walls of windows, 13-foot ceilings, and wall coverings depicting Italian columns, with room for 48 seated guests or 85 guests for a reception. A second private dining room with a sliding glass door offers seating for 12 guests. The 140-seat restaurant includes a 12-seat bar. There's also an outdoor patio with room for 20 seated guests.

W Washington DC just renovated its famed rooftop POV, adding new floor-to-ceiling retractable windows on the terrace for all-year-round views of the White House and the National Mall. POV's new look from architecture and interior design firm Studio Gaia debuted in May. A mural from Baltimore artist Gaia welcomes guests from the rooftop elevators into the Terrace entrance, and the decor incorporates design elements from Brutalist architecture and the D.C. Metro. POV's new seating zones can accommodate as many as 120 seated guests.

In January, restaurateur Ashok Bajaj transformed his power-dining favorite Penn Quarter American brasserie Nopa Kitchen & Bar into a new Mediterranean restaurant called Olivia. The name and cuisine is inspired by an “olive tree,' drawing on the flavors of Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, and Greece with dishes like spicy merguez meatballs, braised short rib tagine, and roasted carrot hummus. Martin Vahtra of Projects Design Associates of New York gave the space a new look, with string lights and greenery. Olivia seats 160 diners, with 38 seats at the bar and lounge and three rooms for private dining. The Gallery Room features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking F Street, audiovisual capability, and a working fireplace. This room seats 40 guests or holds 60 for a standing reception. The private LeDroit Room also includes floor-to-ceiling windows and can accommodate 12 to 20 seated guests or 35 guests for a reception. For smaller gatherings, the Adams Room seats 12 guests and is equipped with a 42-inch HD flat screen television.

#1 Holiday Event The capital's Fourth of July celebration welcomed back John Stamos to host the festivities broadcast live on PBS from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. This year's event featured a packed performance schedule with the likes of Jimmy Buffett and the cast of the Broadway musical Escape to Margaritaville, Pentatonix, the Beach Boys, Andy Grammer, the Temptations, country singer Luke Combs, singer Chita Rivera, violinist Joshua Bell, gospel legend CeCe Winans, American Idol alum Lauren Alaina, and the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductor Jack Everly. Capital Concerts produced the program, with the Boeing Company as a major sponsor. Next: July 4, 2019
