As safe, socially distanced live events and activations make their triumphant return, we wanted to bring you even more inspiration for your own gatherings. Introducing our new 10 Best Ideas of the Month column, where we'll be rounding up all the creative ideas we hadn't had the chance to cover yet. Our May 2021 roundup includes steal-worthy event ideas from Amazon Prime Video, MTV, Cameo, STARZ and more.
Amazon Prime Video's 'Panic' Screening

On May 26, Amazon Prime Video hosted a special outdoor screening of its new teen drama Panic. Held at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, Calif., the event evoked a small town in Texas, with socially distanced, two-person seating pods, complete with personal coolers for drinks, deliveries of Tex-Mex catering and tabletop fire pits for cooking s’mores, as well as blankets, hand sanitizer and more. Event Eleven handled design and production.

Other on-theme highlights at the Panic screening included an entrance through a wooded trail and an exit through a corn maze, along with a DJ booth housed in the back of a rusted pick-up truck.

GHD's 20th Anniversary Activation

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, U.K.-based hair tools brand GHD worked with Gladiator Productions to build a traveling activation in Los Angeles. From May 12-13, a double-decker bus, provided by Starline Tours, traveled through the city and the San Fernando Valley, stopping at influencers' homes as well as professional salons. The bus was wrapped in an ombre, platinum design, which evoked both the product packaging and Britain's standard 20th-anniversary gift of platinum.

While the exterior of the bus served as mobile billboard, the upper deck was transformed into a walkthrough experience. Guests were greeted with custom cocktails inspired by a British afternoon tea, while pop tunes from female British artists played. Printed on the floor was a timeline of the brand’s history, which led to a photo op constructed from actual products. There was also a series of pedestals where guests could try out the products and watch tutorials.

MTV Movie & TV Awards

This year’s MTV Movie & TV Awards took place on May 16 with host Leslie Jones. Airing live from the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, the show was produced by MTV and Den of Thieves—and in a distinctly 2021 twist, the sleek stage featured video walls where celebrities and fans appeared from home. For the first time this year, MTV also hosted a second night of the award show dedicated to unscripted television, which was hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser.

On May 20, businesswoman and producer Dany Garcia held a celebration of her new lifestyle and fashion brand, GSTQ, at the Hollywood Palladium. The outdoor experience featured a pop-up shop with personalized monograms, a drive-in movie screening of Warner Brothers’ upcoming film In The Heights and several rose-filled photo ops. W2 Creative Solutions handled event production, while Jonesworks handled PR and conceived the idea with GSTQ and The Garcia Companies.

Cameo's Mother's Day Activation

Cameo, a video-sharing website where celebrities record personalized messages for fans, worked with GDX Studios on a fun Mother’s Day activation. Giant Cameo-branded cards were displayed at Santa Monica Place in Los Angeles and Hudson Yards Plaza in New York from May 8-9. Inside the oversized cards were digital screens playing personalized videos from top Cameo talent on loop.

Walker Hotels Tats for Tots Mother’s Day Event

How’s this for an unconventional Mother’s Day gift? In honor of the holiday, New York’s Walker Hotel Tribeca tapped Miami-based tattoo artist Mike Suarez for an on-site pop-up tattoo studio called Tats for Tots. From May 7-9, Suarez inked Mother’s Day-appropriate permanent tattoos for $150 at the 171-room hotel; all proceeds benefited New Yorkers for Children, a nonprofit that supports the city’s youth. Semi-permanent tattoos were also available for $25 at both the Walker Hotel Tribeca and the Walker Greenwich Village.

STARZ's ‘Run the World’ Premiere

To celebrate its new original series Run the World, STARZ hosted an intimate screening and event at the Beekman Hotel rooftop in New York. In addition to entertainment from DJ Tiff McFierce and catering by Tom Colicchio, attendees could take photo ops in a park bench-inspired space, which evoked the series’ promotional art and Harlem setting.
