1. IS THE DINNER PARTY OVER?: The New York Times: "The seated dinner, with its minuet of invitation and acceptance, its formalities and protocols, its culinary and dietary challenges, its inherent requirements of guest and host, alike is under threat, many say. … What has also occurred, said David E. Monn, a prominent event planner, is that party manners have become so rusty from disuse, and guests so generally clueless, that a need has emerged for people like him to train socialites not to eat peas with a knife." http://nyti.ms/TvIqRt
2. CHINA'S BOX OFFICE: China will surpass the United States as the largest film market by 2020, according to a report Ernst & Young released Wednesday at its Global Media and Entertainment Markets Executive Forum in Shanghai. It also predicts that China’s advertising market would become the second-largest by next year. One executive told the Hollywood Reporter "companies would also need an understanding of the 'cultural nuances across geography, age and income level' to sustain brand loyalty from Chinese customers. The report suggests foreign investors build strong brands and establish successful partnerships with digital-savvy Chinese counterparts." http://bit.ly/V2Fhb3
3. TRIBUTE TO DICK CLARK: ABC's New Year's Eve broadcast will begin with a two-hour tribute to Dick Clark, who died in April. The iconic show from Times Square also will keep its name since 2005, Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest. New York Times: http://nyti.ms/U3X7Y4
4. LIVING SOCIAL LAYOFFS: The daily deals site and growing player in the event market may cut as many as 400 jobs across the United States. The Washington Business Journal: "For the 5-year-old social commerce company, the long-rumored layoffs reflect a struggle to stabilize itself financially after a frenzied head count expansion in 2011." http://bit.ly/V7ZNFx
