October 14, 2013: See a $40,000 Birthday Party, Motorcycle Events Struggle to Attract Fans, Multiple Comic Cons Compete for Business

1. SEE WHAT A $40,000 BIRTHDAY PARTY LOOKS LIKE: For an 18th birthday party for twins in England, a favorite event planner of Simon Cowell and Elton John's designed an extravaganza that had an Ibiza and carnival theme—and a V.I.P. section. Daily Mail: "Guests arriving at the girls' Essex mansion were met by fire-breathing models before being chauffeured through the grounds of the house by golf buggy to a £60,000 marquee, where along with an appearance from the Hackney musician [Professor Green], partygoers were treated to a fireworks display and cocktails including the Porn Star Martini—a blend of Krug champagne, Ketel One vodka and Passoa passion fruit liqueur." http://dailym.ai/19oLJlk

2. MOTORCYCLE EVENTS STRUGGLE TO ATTRACT FANS: Biketoberfest, an event for motorcycle enthusiasts in Daytona Beach, Florida, and other major motorcycle shows across the country have seen attendance sag as bikers head to smaller regional events and the fewer young people take up the hobby. Planners are looking to change their marketing strategies and add to the mix of events. Daytona Beach News-Journal: “We all have to work harder to keep the bikers here for the four days versus just two,” said Jeffrey Hentz, executive director of the Halifax Area Advertising Authority, which owns the Biketoberfest trademark. “We don't want to give up an hour, much less a day, of their time.” http://bit.ly/16b0qo2

3. COMIC CONS COMPETE FOR BUSINESS: New York Comic Con took place this weekend, attracting legions of costumed attendees and what planners hope is an engaging mix of vendors that help separate it from several competing fan events. Reuters: "The proliferation of such events, the explosion of social media and the overwhelming size of the gatherings are forcing companies to change their own approaches to meeting, engaging and hooking new and old fans." http://bit.ly/1hQwDGx
