1. V.M.A.S PREDICTABLY DELIVER SHOCK DURING SHOW: Kanye West announced he would run for president at the MTV Video Music Awards last night, one of the bizarre highlights of the show. Reuters: “Viacom Inc-owned MTV's annual VMA hands out Moonman statuettes to the year's top achievements in music videos, but is better known for delivering irreverent and unexpected moments. Sunday's show was all about the shock factor as a scantily clad Miley Cyrus, 22, cursed her way through her hosting duties, flashed her bare breast accidentally and performed a new song about smoking marijuana.” http://reut.rs/1JrCn7G
2. HOW RESIDENTS MARKED THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF KATRINA: Three presidents visited New Orleans in the span of three days, the highest-profile events of the commemorations of the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. But the week featured many events—as well as people who preferred not to dwell on the devastating hurricane. The New York Times: “It has been a week of art exhibits, dinners, panels and lectures — a week of extended discussions about what the last 10 years have been about, without arriving at any real consensus. There have been city-sanctioned talks about the recovery as ‘a model for urban America’ and summit meetings about ‘the capitalist crimes inflicted on New Orleans’s working class.’ The official anniversary commemoration had its own logo, its own color scheme and its own ubiquitous buzzword: resilience. The message from many civic and business leaders was that the city was better than ever, or at least on track to be. Yet playing underneath it all was the counterpoint of shootings, the unchanging routine of workers in the low-wage tourist economy and the occasional outbursts of raw grief from those reminded of the worst period of their lives.” http://nyti.ms/1ieNbPP
3. POPULAR STAND-UP COMEDIANS MOVE FROM CLUBS TO STADIUMS: Comedian Kevin Hart is filling stadiums and arenas during his current “What Now?” road tour—one of several massively popular comedy tours that are filling huge venues. Wall Street Journal: “What’s behind the boom? For starters, the comedians playing the enormo-dome arenas are accomplished performers who have been building their material, performance styles and fan bases in some cases for decades. … Arena comedy can be spectacular or low-key. Louis C.K.’s shows at the Garden, and Jerry Seinfeld’s biggest show—for 20,000 at London’s O2 Arena in 2011—looked like the gigs they do anywhere else. For his 2006 'Vicious Circle' tour, Dane Cook performed from a round stage in the center of the arena, like it was a circus or boxing match. He ran down an aisle and up to the stage while high-fiving fans. Mr. Hart has brought giant screens and pyrotechnics (literally devices that blast fire) to his tour.” http://on.wsj.com/1WWfWAI
