April 12, 2018: PBS Will Air Five-Part Royal Wedding Special, Nascar Events Are Using Technology to Take Down Drones, International Champions Cup Will Add Women’s Competition This Year

1. PBS WILL AIR FIVE-PART ROYAL WEDDING SPECIAL: PBS will air “Royal Wedding Watch” a five-part special that will end with the live broadcast of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding on May 19. Page Six: “The series will be hosted by Meredith Vieira and British television presenter Matt Baker. For five days, the two will keep royal wedding fanatics updated on the fancy preparations for the event before Harry and Meghan are joined in matrimony at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. Throughout the week, the hosts will be joined in-studio by experts, commentators and special guests. BBC presenter and host Anita Rani will report live from Windsor Castle each night, and English historian Lucy Worsley, Joint Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces, will give the audience all we need to know about the pageantry, pomp and protocol surrounding the royal couple’s nuptials. ‘Royal Wedding Watch’ will be produced by BBC Studios’ Topical and Live Unit and will come nightly from London.” https://pge.sx/2JzCPZj

2. NASCAR EVENTS ARE USING TECHNOLOGY TO TAKE DOWN DRONES: In an effort to prevent drones from recording footage of its races at the Texas Motor Speedway, Nascar has partnered with anti-drone technology company DroneShield to take down drones. TechCrunch: "The company makes a handful of products, all aimed at detecting and safely intercepting drones that are flying where they shouldn’t. That’s a growing problem, of course, and not just at airports or Area 51. A stray drone at a major sporting event could fall and interrupt the game, or strike someone, or at a race it may even cause a major accident. Most recently it introduced a new version of its handheld 'DroneGun,' which scrambles the UAV’s signal so that it has no choice but to safely put itself down, as these devices are generally programmed to do. You can’t buy one—technically, they’re illegal —but the police sure can. Recently DroneShield’s tech was deployed at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane and at the Olympics in PyeongChang, and now the company has announced that it was tapped by a number of Texas authorities for the protection of stock car races. 'We are proud to be able to assist a high-profile event like this,' said Oleg Vornik, DroneShield’s CEO, in an email announcing the news." https://tcrn.ch/2qmow2r

3. INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONS CUP WILL ADD WOMEN€S COMPETITION THIS YEAR: The International Champions Cup, a five-year-old soccer showcase, is adding a women’s event this year. The New York Times: “Manchester City, Paris St.-Germain, the N.W.S.L.’s North Carolina Courage and a fourth club will make up the first Women’s I.C.C. field. The tournament will be contested in two doubleheaders in South Florida this summer: back-to-back semifinal matches on July 27, and then a third-place game and the final on July 29 at Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Dolphins’ home stadium, in Miami Gardens. The fourth team has not been confirmed, but Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Barcelona are among those on the shortlist to take part. The small size of the tournament is a concerted effort by Relevent Sports, which owns the I.C.C., to focus on making the first year a success even as it plans to double its size as soon as next year. Many of the clubs that regularly compete in the I.C.C. now have professional women’s teams, and Relevent’s executive chairman, Charlie Stillitano, said they had been agitating for ways to get those squads exposure outside their home markets. When Relevent told its club partners that the women’s event was finally happening, nearly a dozen teams asked to take part. … The games are part of an effort by Relevent Sports, which created the I.C.C. in 2013, to expand its soccer business but also to fill the void of top-flight intercontinental women’s competitions, especially those for clubs—an area that even FIFA has identified as ripe for significant growth.” https://nyti.ms/2GR41VQ
