The story of Cirque du Soleil's newest production, Corteo, centres on a funeral procession (or cortege, which in Italian is corteo) that takes place in a circuslike atmosphere. So it's little wonder that the opening-night after-party at Republik nightclub was a carnival of clowns, angels, and other characters from the show. Maria Villegas of E.L. Productions coordinated the reception with the help of Eugenia List, producer, and Lauren Harris, creative project coordinator.
Decor and costume specialist Judy Inc. dressed models in a variety of angel outfits suggestive of the play's musing about life in the hereafter. A circular platform in the smaller of the venue's two party spaces supported several models in angel garb. They gazed up at a more heavily costumed angel suspended from the ceiling.
Strolling past this arresting scene, attendees arrived at a buffet station from ByPeterandPauls.com's Table Talk with homemade Cracker Jack-style snack mix served in Chinese take-out containers, candy apples dipped in silver and gold sparkles, and popsicles infused with fruit-flavoured liqueurs.
The hallway connecting the two rooms was covered in sheer white fabric and completed by chandeliers and red lighting from Westbury National Show Systems. The larger space featured ceiling-mounted lights focused downward to create tiny stars on the floor. The tables throughout were covered in white gossamer and topped with flickering votive candles. Here and there, models dressed as angels posed silently, the name of the show painted on their chests. In one corner of the room, a pair of clowns was busily engaged making balloon characters for passing partygoers. Meanwhile, caterwaiters sporting event sponsor Calvin Klein's white underwear and costume angel wings served an endless supply of red cocktails featuring Iceberg Vodka.
The show's cast and crew and their guests celebrated into the early morning.
