To promote the release of Janet Jackson's new album, Damita Jo, Virgin Records and Maneesh Goyal of MKG Productions chose to highlight the Eastern feel already present at trendy meatpacking district eatery Spice Market, with sexy lighting from Halie Light L'Observatoire International and exotic flowers from Bridget Vizoso. The subtle yet sensual touch seemed to send a hopeful vibe to the negative publicity-laden Jackson, still recovering from the now infamous Super Bowl "wardrobe malfunction."
Brightly colored floral garland dressed Damita Jo signage and accented the wooden architecture of Spice Market's ground floor. Hip-hop music from DJ SnS—including tracks from Jackson's new album, of course—blasted from Timbre Tech's custom-built obelisk-shaped speakers. Guests seated upstairs could peek through wooden slats surrounding the balcony into the crowded downstairs lounge, complete with a towering pagoda-like fixture and moss, tulip and orchid arrangements on each of the low-lying tables.
In the back of the lounge, semi-private alcoves, lined with cream-colored banquettes, satin-trimmed pillows and gauzy blue curtains provided an escape for celebrity guests like Patti LaBelle, Jermaine Dupri, Tommy Davidson and Queer Eye's Jai Rodriguez. Perhaps the most daring and controversial factor of the evening was the presence of Jackson's Virgin labelmate—and fellow scandal-starter—Courtney Love, who managed to attend the event without incident. So much for Page Six.
