1. GOVERNMENT ENDS N.F.L.’S BLACKOUT RULE: The Federal Communications Commission voted to end its rule allowing the N.F.L. to keep its games from airing on local television for games with poor attendance. The rule encouraged people to buy tickets and support the local teams and stadiums, but federal regulators said it no longer made sense in an age when the league makes more money from TV deals than from ticket sales. Washington Post: “The rule was initially put in place in 1975 amid concerns of flagging attendance at live sports games. At the time, almost 60 percent of NFL games were blacked out on broadcast TV because not enough fans were showing up at stadiums. Today, that figure stands at less than one percent. … In new contracts, the NFL would have to renew those blackout provisions over the objections of the federal government. AEG said it needs additional time to pursue an N.F.L. franchise and also to further assess and develop an alternative plan for the expansion and modernization of the convention center and the potential construction of another large hotel at L.A.
