Charity Events Vie for Donors: Globe and Mail Calls Toronto a Hotbed of Competition

Event planners are taking "creativity to dizzying heights” in an effort to attract guests to high-end fund-raisers, according to Saturday’s Globe and Mail. It’s no longer uncommon for one-night galas to raise $1 million, and Toronto’s social calendar is packed with events geared toward the luxury market, says reporter Tenille Bonoguore.

That trend is putting pressure on planners to keep things fresh and different. “What the late Anna Maria de Souza started with the Brazilian Carnival Ball in 1966, others have had to top with ever-glitzier auctions, fabulous theme balls, rare-wine tastings, glamorous guest stars, and even an elephant or two (as at one of the Grand Cru Culinary Wine Festival events),” Bonoguore writes.
