August 20, 2014: N.F.L. Wants Halftime Performers to Pay to Play, Fashion Week Will Include Military Salute, What’s in Store for the Toronto International Film Festival

1. N.F.L. WANTS HALFTIME PERFORMERS TO PAY TO PLAY: Performers at the Super Bowl halftime show currently entertain for free, but the N.F.L. is asking three potential acts—Katy Perry, Rihanna, and Coldplay—to pay the league for the opportunity. NBC Sports: “It only takes one performer to bite the hook in order for the NFL to parlay the halftime show into even more of a moneymaker. And it’s entirely possible that the league leaked the development in order to pressure one of the three to blink, given that plenty of other performers who would gladly give up a piece of a pie they otherwise don’t have will now be calling the league to offer whatever the league wants for the privilege of playing to one of the biggest audiences in TV history.” http://bit.ly/1tn3zgW

2. FASHION WEEK WILL INCLUDE MILITARY SALUTE: In a move they’re calling “Salute the Runway,” New York Fashion Week planners will honor members of the military with a show that uses female service members as models. Women’s Wear Daily: “The show is a culmination of a program held at military bases around the country raising awareness of the challenges facing military servicewomen as they transition back to civilian life. It is sponsored by Little Black Dress Wines and Fatigues to Fabulous, a national campaign designed to support women serving in the U.S. military and the issues they face—from medical, housing and employment to being appropriately dressed.” http://bit.ly/1pdGeip

3. WHAT’S IN STORE FOR THE TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL: The Toronto International Film Festival announced the celebrities planning to attend the event as well as some of the premieres it will host. Toronto Star: “The festival also unveiled details of its new Festival Street initiative, which will see King St. W. from University Ave. to Peter St. turned into a pedestrian promenade and art and music fair during the first four days of the festival, Sept. 4 to 7. Highlights of Festival Street include a photo booth featuring HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey, plus strolling characters from various Stanley Kubrick films, aimed at promoting TIFF’s major Kubrick exhibit later this fall. Festival Street will also include a tribute to NFB animation pioneer Norman McLaren, who would have turned 100 this year.” http://on.thestar.com/1tdjXCi
