1. FACEBOOK DEBUTS NEW EVENTS APP: Facebook has launched a new standalone app for its Events feature that will be accessible through its main app. The app was released on iOS and will soon be available for Android users. Mashable: “For those who still have bad dreams about the day Facebook required them to download Messenger, don't worry. Facebook isn't requiring users of the service's Events feature to download the Events app (at least not yet). Like Facebook Groups, it's for users—probably power users—who prefer to manage Events in a dedicated app. Once you open the app, ‘You can quickly catch up on new events your friends are interested in, recently announced events by the Pages you like, and updates from events you're already connected to,’ according to Facebook. You can also search for events you may be interested in based on time and location. While much of this is functionality you can get from the Events section of the main Facebook app or website, the Events app also features an interactive map so you can easily browse through events you may be interested in when you're traveling. The app also helps you keep better track of the events you've responded to by adding them to an in-app calendar that you can sync with your other calendar apps. Everything you do on the app will also automatically be visible on Facebook whether or not they have the app as the network wants your friends to be able to see all the events you're interested in or attending.” http://on.mash.to/2deBNE1
2. SECOND PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE PROVIDES A SERIES OF HEATED MOMENTS: The second presidential debate last night was arguably the ugliest and nastiest in American history. The 90-minute event between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump at Washington University in St. Louis presented a series of heated exchanges that shocked both the audience and viewers following along on TV and social media. Politico: “It was nearly non-stop name-calling and nastiness–they opened by dispensing with the traditional handshake and an agitated Trump repeatedly encroached Clinton’s physical space as he paced the debate stage. There were only brief reprieves of policy discussion that soon devolved back into a contentious affair, even as they had to balance their attacks with flashes of geniality before a town-hall audience of undecided voters. From its earliest moments, the debate was colored by the events of the last 48 hours, when a decade-old tape on Friday revealed Trump describing in graphic and sexually aggressive terms making unwanted advances on women, which he said he was entitled to do because he is a “star.” Legions of Republicans have abandoned his campaign in the last two days over lecherous remarks that moderator Anderson Cooper described to Trump on Sunday night as amounting to ‘sexual assault.’ Trump tried to downplay the tape—’it’s just words folks, it’s just words’—as he shifted the topic to Bill Clinton, to the Islamic State, to Clinton’s emails, to anything else. … In the final half hour, a frustrated Trump started the blame game, claiming the moderators were unfairly allowing Clinton’s answers to run long while he was being repeatedly cut off. But most of the campaign was spent deep in the gutter. A brief, bright moment came in the end, when both candidate were asked by a voter what they respected about one another. Clinton said Trump’s children. He said he admired her ‘fight.’ ‘She doesn’t quit,’ Trump said.” http://politi.co/2dYhjgk
3. NETFLIX ANNOUNCES OSCAR-QUALIFYING DEAL WITH THEATER CHAIN: Netflix has partnered with iPic Entertainment, a theater chain with 15 locations in the United States, to screen 10 of the streaming service’s original films. The new deal will allow Netflix to become eligible to win Oscars. TechCrunch: “To qualify for an Oscar, original films have to be shown in a Los Angeles theater for seven days starting the same day it is available online. And for the documentary category, films have to be shown in both New York and Los Angeles four times daily with one screening occurring between 6pm–10pm. These requirements definitely weren’t designed for content studios like HBO or Netflix, which prefer to limit content consumption to their own platform. But Netflix wants an Oscar—it would add credibility to not only their content studio but also to their vision of subscription-based streaming as a major distribution method. The new deal with iPic will make it easier for Netflix to meet these qualifications with its original content. And yes, Netflix has already shown some content in theaters (like the much-loved Beasts of No Nation) and received Oscar nominations for a few documentaries, but there was never a deal like this one, which secures at least 10 original films for Oscar award eligibility.” http://tcrn.ch/2eaSVfE
