October 27, 2014: 'Boston Globe' Starts Film Festival, How Museums Are Going Digital, 5 Inspiring Gala Themes

1. 'BOSTON GLOBE' STARTS FILM FESTIVAL: The Boston Globe is moving into the film festival business, announcing the launch of GlobeDocs last week. The project will start with a series of free screenings of documentaries with the goal of holding a film festival next year. Pointer: “The business thinking behind these live meetups—from next year’s film festival to events the paper’s has been putting on for years—is to position The Globe to become a convener of the community in addition to its chronicler, [C.E.O. Mike] Sheehan said. The events, which build and showcase the verticals’ respective audiences, have the potential to indirectly drive revenue by making them more attractive to advertisers.” http://bit.ly/10uVWMY

2. HOW MUSEUMS ARE GOING DIGITAL: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian Institution, and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum are rolling out initiatives to cater to guests who increasingly want to connect with collections digitally. The New York Times: “The museum of the future will come in evolutionary steps. But some steps are already being taken. Digital technologies being deployed or developed include: augmented reality, a sort of smart assistant software that delivers supplemental information or images related to an artwork to a smartphone; high-definition projections of an artwork, a landscape or night sky that offer an immersive experience; and 3-D measurement and printing technology that lets people reproduce, hold and feel an accurate replica of an object.” http://nyti.ms/1DSBqnH
