THIS WEEK'S CALENDAR:
TUESDAY: The Wall Street Journal’s All Things Digital: D10 conference begins in Los Angeles (through Thursday)
WEDNESDAY: H.S.M.A.I.’s Meet West begins in Anaheim (through Thursday)
THURSDAY: CTV Upfront in Toronto
SATURDAY: Opera Ball in Washington, D.C., Premiere Orlando International Beauty Event (through Monday)
* INCOMING *
1. NOT-SO-GRAND OLD PARTY: Lobbyists and trade groups are scaling back their party plans for the Republican National Convention in Tampa this summer, hosting lunches instead of nighttime parties or forgoing events altogether. Politico: "The combination of tight corporate budgets, ethics rules, and unappealing weather—the average high for Tampa in August is 90 degrees—and it's a recipe for trade groups and lobbyists to spend time anywhere but Florida. Plus, Mitt Romney is anything but a creature of Washington, making him less of a draw for the inside the Beltway crowd. The strict Democratic convention rules, which don't allow corporate contributions, are also dissuading companies from getting involved in Tampa because they are concerned about maintaining parity among Republican and Democratic activities." http://bit.ly/Lw8lEY
2. POLITICAL FASHION: Vogue editor Anna Wintour is planning a fund-raiser for President Obama at Harpo Studios in Chicago's West Loop. Slated for June 12, the event dubbed "Runway to Win," is open to the public—for $150 a pop—and will include clothing designed in support of the president's reelection campaign. 3. CALVIN KLEIN'S V.I.P. DEAL: The fashion company is investing $4 million in a sponsorship deal at the new Barclays Center, home to the N.B.A.'s Brooklyn Nets. It includes 700 seats in a courtside club as well as a V.I.P. entrance. The New York Post: "Entering through the Calvin Klein V.I.P. gate, guests will ride an elevator adorned with more Calvin Klein logos before arriving at the courtside Calvin Klein club. Arena officials called the pact a 'street to seat' immersion in the brand." The $1 billion stadium opens with a September 28 gala. http://nyp.st/K9btZl
4. MORE SOCIAL AWARDS: Another annual honors ceremony taking to the digital sphere is MTV's Movie Awards. To build momentum for the show, which airs June 3, the music channel is employing hashtags to get consumers to vote in the "Best Hero" category. The event will also have a Twitter Tracker and live stream. Ad Age: http://bit.ly/JrlHOM
5. AD ATTENTION: Advertising reviews are drawing scrutiny from the top instead of remaining the sole responsibility of the C.M.O. Adweek: "Instead of rubber-stamping the recommendations of their marketing departments—as CEOs have typically done in the past—these chiefs are actively participating…Corner office involvement in ad reviews also reflects the reality that after years of cost cutting and growing through acquisitions, corporations are leaning on marketing to drive organic growth." http://bit.ly/LwTs1C
