TODAY'S CALENDAR: Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) begins in L.A. (through Thursday)
* INCOMING *
1. AIR FORCE CANCELS CONFERENCE: The Air Force has canceled its annual information-technology conference this summer because of "budgetary concerns and enhanced scrutiny over conference spending." Washington Business Journal: "'Across the Air Force and Defense Department, there is a lot of scrutiny happening with conferences and government spending,' said Air Force spokesman Jason Bishop. 'Almost all of these are getting canceled.'" The event, scheduled for Aug 27-29 in Montgomery, Alabama, has drawn up to 6,000 attendees. Travel costs alone were expected to reach $1.4 million. bizjournals.com/w...
2. VEGAS'S BIGGEST ATTRACTION: A developer has plans to build the largest Ferris wheel in the United States in Las Vegas. AdWeek: "Set to open late next year, the SkyVue will tower 500 feet above the strip across from the Mandalay Bay. It will have a 50,000-square-foot LED sign on either side of the wheel. Which means that SkyVue won’t just be a major tourist attraction, it’ll be the largest physical branding vehicle in the country. It will be, that is, for a high-rolling brand. [Developer Howard] Bulloch’s plans include category exclusives for the wheel—one brand each for automotive, beverage and electronics—and the three takers will share time on the big boards (each of which, by the way, has more LED signage than Times Square) and throughout the wheel itself, which includes retail and convention space, and 32 passenger gondolas that Bulloch envisions as airborne brand showrooms." adweek.com/news/a...
3. GAYLORD FALLOUT: Marriott's $210 million deal to acquire the Gaylord brand and long-term management contracts for its four hotels could hold implications for meeting planners who have upcoming meetings at Gaylord properties. "Planners' concerns surfaced in postings on the Facebook page of Joan Eisenstodtd, principal strategist with Eisenstodt Associates in Washington, D.C., … [who] initiated the discussion when she wrote that she is “curious to know how many Gaylord contracted groups were told about Marriott management of Gaylord hotels.” Travel Market Report: travelmarketrepor...
4. DISNEY'S NUTRITION PLEDGE: Disney will limit junk food advertising during its programming in an anti-obesity initiative. New York Times: "All products advertised on its child-focused television channels, radio stations and Web sites must comply with a strict new set of nutritional standards. The restrictions on ads extend to Saturday-morning cartoons on ABC stations owned by Disney. Under the new rules, products like Capri Sun drinks and Kraft Lunchables meals — both current Disney advertisers — along with a wide range of candy, sugared cereal and fast food, will no longer be acceptable advertising material." The company plans to announce the initiative at an event today with first lady Michelle Obama in Washington. http://nyti.ms/L4aR4b
5. OLYMPIC SPONSOR DEMANDS: The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games is enforcing restrictions harsher than those in China four years ago. Ad Age: "Sponsors—including McDonald's Corp., Coca-Cola, British Airways, and Adidas—who have together paid $1 billion for the right to be a part of the games, demand extreme levels of exclusivity, creating a kind of corporate straightjacket around the two-week-long event starting July 27." adage.com/article...
6. THE QUEEN'S COLORS: Kate Middleton isn't the only royal fashion plate fascinating us. In honor of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee, Leo Burnett in London and Pantone created a color wheel based on her color-matched wardrobe. AdWeek: "The Queen's decision to favor one color in every outfit is a strong style statement. Monochromatic color schemes make the wearer appear taller, delivering a more stately air—perfect given that Queen Elizabeth is not tall at 5-foot-4. Choosing one color theme also ensures the outfit does not detract attention from the wearer—which is particularly important if you're the Queen," Pantone's Leatrice Eiseman said. adweek.com/adfrea...
