Elvis Presley wasn’t officially on the guest list for the seventh-annual Gerry & Nancy Pencer Brain Trust fund-raiser, held at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. But he was definitely there in spirit. The event, dubbed Viva Las Vegas after the 1964 film starring Elvis and Ann-Margret, featured a glam dress code, music by the king, eats such as fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches (an Elvis favourite), and of course, an Elvis impersonator, who performed in a Graceland-style wedding chapel. More than 1,000 guests attended the blowout, including notables such as Toronto Argonauts head coach Michael “Pinball” Clemons; billionaire Bernard “Barry” Sherman, founder of Apotex; and Warren Mason, medical director of the Pencer Brain Tumor Centre. Nancy Pencer, president of the Gerry & Nancy Pencer Brain Trust, hosted the party, with Gord Martineau, senior co-anchor of Citytv’s CityNews, serving as master of ceremonies. Karen Jacobs, event director for Up & Coming Events, supplied event management services.Vegas-strip glitz appeared throughout, including in the lounge area with its cabana-style seating from Church Street Flowers. Gold-coloured sheer fabric framed private sitting areas, each with gold couches, shimmering pillows, and hot pink bouquets of roses atop coffee tables with gold-mirror tops. The private sitting areas flanked tall cylindrical gold couches with small mirrored cafe tables and clear designer stools from Contemporary Furniture Rentals. The space also featured a massive, square gold-coloured bar with soaring white faux palm trees and a small stage. The lineup of entertainers included Elvis, Cher, and Celine Dion impersonators and acrobats from Hangtime Presents. Guests sat on transparent bar stools at tall gold-mirrored banquet tables while watching the show.
The courtyard space contained a café area with small tables covered by heavy gold-coloured linens with hot-pink textured overlays and clear cylinders filled with coiled yellow tulips. Nearby, the silent auction space featured pink-fringed chandeliers hung above gold pedestal display tables. “Lucky” keys sold by showgirls from Champagne Showgirls gave guests a chance to win a pair of diamond-drop earrings. Photographers from Signature Studios offered to take photos of guests against a green-screen backdrop in the wedding chapel. The Anita Rossi Band provided the evening’s main entertainment.
