December is here, which means the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, delayed after big financial problems, is at last poised to open. The property on the Strip between CityCenter and the Bellagio has 2,995 rooms; a nightclub and lounge; 150,000 square feet of convention and banquet facilities; restaurants; a 50,000-square-foot spa, salon, and fitness center; 60,000 square feet of retail space; 100,000 square feet of casino space; and three pool areas, and its doors will swing open to the first guests next week. Here's a rundown of the planned opening events.
The doors will open at 8 p.m. on December 15. The Cosmopolitan will premiere a series of curated musical events with a concert by Brandon Flowers at the Boulevard Pool at 10 p.m.; tickets are available through the property's social media channels on Facebook and Twitter, as well as radio giveaways. The show from the Killers frontman (and Las Vegas native) may also be seen from the strip on the resort's 65-foot digital marquee.
Also on opening day, a series of touring and up-and-coming entertainers will take the stage on casino floor venues Book & Stage, Bond, and the Chandelier. The Boulevard Pool is a multilevel pool area as well as a concert venue with unobstructed sight lines, Book & Stage is a sports and entertainment lounge, Bond is a nightspot that offers house music, and the Chandelier is a three-story chandelier-like space covered in crystals that offers three bar areas.
The new property will also celebrate its opening with a multiday New Year celebration, including solo and mash-up New Year's Eve performances by Coldplay and Jay-Z. The collaboration is officially called "Viva La Hov featuring Coldplay and Jay-Z," and is meant to illustrate the resort's approach to creating a unique luxury experience, according to a release. Revelers on the strip will also be able to view the event by way of the digital marquee. The three-day, invitation-only event begins on December 30, and will be designed in conjunction with Colin Cowie.
In addition to the performances on New Year's Eve, the weekend will also include a surprise performance on the Boulevard Pool deck, and the debut of the Cosmopolitan's hefty restaurant collection from a roster of big-name chefs.
