Built in 1926—it was the first San Diego hotel to have bathrooms in the guest rooms (rather than in the hallway)—the Pickwick Hotel was one of the most luxurious stays in town. After a $16 million renovation, the hotel reopened in January as the Sofia Hotel. While its Gothic-inspired facade remained intact, inside there’s a more organic, natural palette and design. All 212 guest rooms have updated bathroom fixtures, contemporary furniture, flat-screen TVs, and work stations with ergonomic chairs. Meeting space includes an executive boardroom that seats 16, plus several other breakout rooms that hold as many as 42 for seated events. There’s a 24-hour fitness studio and a yoga studio with all the accoutrements, including an on-call instructor. Currant, a restaurant helmed by chef Jonathan Pflueger, is planned for a mid-year opening. —Lesley Balla
