THIS WEEK'S CALENDAR:
THURSDAY: Comic-Con begins in San Diego (through Sunday)
FRIDAY: Pitchfork Music Festival begins in Chicago (through Sunday)
* INCOMING *
1. POSTCARD FROM SUN VALLEY: Experts are predicting big moves at this week's media and tech mogul conference in Sun Valley. Reuters: "The 30-year-old conference, hosted by boutique investment firm Allen & Co has consistently attracted heavy hitters and spawned blockbuster deals including Disney's $19 billion acquisition of Cap Cities/ABC in 1995. However, with the exception of Comcast Corp's 2009 purchase of NBC Universal, few major tie-ups have come out of Sun Valley in recent years. That may change at this year's event, which runs from July 10 to July 14 at the Sun Valley Resort. Developments in just the past few weeks have industry watchers predicting media companies will peel away more assets while they jockey to grab consumers' attention as entertainment options swell." http://reut.rs/MG3K5w
2. PINNING TRADE SHOWS: Pinterest may be a good fit for trade shows. Among the organizations that are using the virtual bulletin board, according to the Savannah Convention and Visitors Bureau, BookExpo America created several boards at this year's event, including pins of keynotes, educational sessions and show floor photos. Trade Show News Network: “By giving B.E.A. a presence on Pinterest we have another tool in the marketing mix of creating buzz for the brand and increasing awareness within our target audiences,” said Kimberlie Leon, B.E.A. director of marketing. http://bit.ly/Nacq01
3. NEW ADVERTISING THEME: The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and brands such as McDonald's are riffing on the Occupy Wall Street movement to pitch products. New York Times: "Marketers are adopting the theme of workers’ rights at a time when unions themselves are confronting declines in membership and influence. In effect, some labor experts say, they are turning a pro-worker theme on its head to serve the corporate interest." http://nyti.ms/Pyl3ar
4. READY FOR THEIR CLOSE-UP: Looking for a venue that has seen major airtime? Huffington Post shares locations from New York to Los Angeles that have provided locations for beloved movies and television shows. http://huff.to/N1Tsva
5. 3-D GIMMICK: Promoters of the movie Katy Perry: Part of Me are giving away limited-edition 3-D glasses at theaters. Hollywood Reporter: "Personally designed by pop star Katy Perry in partnership with RealD, moviegoers buying a ticket for the film will be able to pick up the limited-edition glasses on a first-come, first-served basis at RealD 3D screenings of Perry's movie, which is entering its first weekend of release." http://bit.ly/Mcohio
