November 8, 2016: Online Platforms Offer Election Coverage Alternative, NYPD Takes Extra Security Measures for Election Day, Live Nation Reports Rise in Events and Ticket Sales

1. ONLINE PLATFORMS OFFER ELECTION COVERAGE ALTERNATIVE: TV was the main way to view election-night coverage four years ago, but today platforms including Snapchat and Facebook are offering cable cutters a variety of social ways to follow along. Associated Press: "Among other things, Snapchat users will be able to see 'live stories' on the app—showing people at the polls, election results, acceptance and concession speeches and election night celebrations. In the U.S., users will see overlays they can add to their snaps. CNN will have live coverage with reporters in battleground states, as well as drone shots of voting locations and international reaction throughout the day. Each hour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. will be streamed from a different location. After 6 p.m., the network will continue Facebook Live streams from various locations, including watch parties and, again, battleground states. NowThis, a news outlet aimed at millennials, will have video coverage on its Facebook page. Comedian Jordan Carlos will host the stream, called 'No Sleep til POTUS.' The Washington Post is planning live programming on its Facebook page beginning at 7 p.m. The show will include commentary and updates from Post reporters, including those at campaign headquarters for both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. … Twitter is partnering with BuzzFeed News for a live stream from BuzzFeed's New York headquarters. The stream will begin at 6 p.m. Twitter says segments will include critiques of traditional news outlets and how they are covering the election, as well as live reports from BuzzFeed journalists at various locations throughout the U.S. and elsewhere." http://apne.ws/2fMHFI6

2. NYPD TAKES EXTRA SECURITY MEASURES FOR ELECTION DAY: With Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump's election-night parties taking place just blocks from each other, the New York Police Department is upping security in the city. ABC News: "This is the first time in over 70 years that both major-party presidential nominees will be in New York City on election night, and the city's police force is preparing in kind. Carlos Gomez, the New York Police Department's chief of department, said the city is planning to deploy more officers on Tuesday than on any previous Election Day, 'more than double than our previous high.' He said more than 5,000 officers will work on Tuesday but would not give a specific number. The police deployment plan will be 'comparable to New Year's Eve and when Pope Francis visited last year,' he said. … The city's Mayor Bill de Blasio said police will be at each of the city's 1,200 polling places, which will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Beyond that, he said, 'we have beefed up our ability to handle multiple sites simultaneously,' a capacity that will clearly be needed Tuesday night, when Clinton holds her election night event at the Javits Center and Trump holds his at a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan." http://abcn.ws/2fvCURR

3. LIVE NATION REPORTS RISE IN EVENTS AND TICKET SALES: Live Nation has reported a better quarterly profit because of a rise in events held and tickets sold by the concert promoters. Billboard: “The company sold 28 million tickets across 6,162 events of its own, and sold 42.5 million tickets overall. Broken down by region, international events actually dropped, from 1,467 in Q3 2015 to 1,207 this past quarter—meaning all gains were in North America, where it threw an additional 517 events year-over-year. Besides events, Ticketmaster was the largest contributor to the company bottom line, bringing in $460.3 million at constant currency. The company estimates it will have moved 70 million tickets by year's end. Notably, the company says installations of the Ticketmaster app were up 44 percent across all of this year, and that mobile ticket sales accounted for 27 percent of ticket sales. The company has also been aggressively acquiring companies over the past two years; Austin City Limits organizer C3 in 2014, Governor's Ball this year and Bonnaroo co-founder AC Entertainment just weeks ago (after purchasing that marquee festival outright in mid-2015).” http://bit.ly/2fWK4iD
