The Other Hollywood

Brittany PeitsmeyerChanning Muller
September 26, 2007
Between swarming Fort Lauderdale and Miami, Hollywood and Hallandale Beach are the perfect blend of the metropolitan cities to the north and south, with an added hint of Southern charm. Their racial diversity, cultural variety, and resident balance of old and young make them an interesting and desirable option for the event industry. In fact, Money magazine claims the demographics of these blossoming cities will resemble those of the entire United States in the year 2022. From downtown to the beach, Hollywood's and Hallandale's pedestrian-friendly ambience is sure to satisfy.HOT VENUES

The Westin Diplomat Resort & Spa offers 209,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a 50,000-square-foot great hall and 39 breakout rooms, comfortably accommodating groups of eight to 8,000. The new on-site restaurant, Aszia, in the former Satine space, offers guests 7,500 square feet of private dining space. Across the street, Diplomat Landing features a variety of boutiques, restaurants, and nightlife. Nikki Marina has both indoor and outdoor dining, and can seat 150 people inside and as many as 200 outside. For larger events, the marina can accommodate as many as 1,400 standing guests. Just a short shuttle ride away is the 60-room Diplomat Country Club, with a 30,000-square-foot spa, championship golf course, tennis courts, and its own event space.

Renovated and newly reopened, the 158,000-square-foot facility at Gulfstream Park sits on 250 acres and offers more than just world-class thoroughbred racing. In addition to 22 luxury suites, each accommodating as many as 20 guests, the space also features Chase, a fine-dining restaurant that can host as many as 600 for private events, and Ten Palms, which can hold as many as 1,200 guests reception-style—and it will also soon be the new home of world-famous Christine Lee's, with additional private banquet space. Gulfstream Park's newly opened on-site 1,200-square-foot casino boasts Las Vegas-style slot machines and poker tables. The martini lounge, terrace, Breezeway Bar, and other locations offer small-group and informal settings, as well.

Where Hollywood Boulevard meets U.S. Highway 1 stands ArtsPark at Young Circle. The 10-acre Young Circle Park has been revamped into a interactive green space where visitors can partake of artistic and cultural activities or simply relax. Japanese architect Ritsuko Taho was responsible for the interactive fountain and landscaping. The project's second phase, scheduled to begin soon, will add a two-story visual arts building with 6,714 square feet of interior space, plus a covered outdoor work area and demonstration space.

To the west, occupying 100 acres of the Hollywood Reservation of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, lies the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood. This $250 million property boasts more than 30,000 square feet of meeting space, including a 16,000-square-foot grand ballroom that is divisible into eight sections and several smaller rooms for breakout or board meetings. The 19,000-square-foot lagoon-style pool, complete with a 182-foot waterslide, provides an additional 7,000 square feet of function space. Inside, group events can be nestled around the 22,000-square-foot spa, the 140,000-square-foot casino floor, or one of the seven restaurants, including the Hard Rock Cafe, all of which offer private dining facilities. Adjacent to the 12-story hotel is an outdoor entertainment and retail complex—the Seminole Paradise—that includes a variety of venues with event options. The Hard Rock Live, a 5,500-seat indoor arena, is also on the premises

Le Tub, a multilevel saloon on the Intracoastal waterway, was formerly a Sunoco gas station built in 1959 that closed due to the oil crunch in the 1970s. The eatery has been recognized by GQ magazine and on Oprah. The unsophisticated decor consists of toilets and bathtubs that have washed up on shore and been recycled as plant holders, and the overgrown shrubbery provides an intimate feel—Le Tub has a maximum capacity of 100 guests. The establishment only accepts cash and serves all fare on paper plates with plastic utensils, but it's still a must-visit.

The 2.2-mile Hollywood Beach Boardwalk can send your group on a cultural culinary roller coaster. From Argentinean steak houses to dive bars fit for any Jimmy Buffett fan, the possibilities are endless. Live entertainment can be enjoyed at the 500-seat beachfront amphitheater.
